Brighton appear to have rejected a
7 million offer for a winger

17 Aug 2026 17:07:41
Why?

For example - Buy for let's say £5M with 50% sell on rather than say £10M

If we sell for £15M - it's £5M profit. It's the same.

Appreciate this is basic, and there is agent fees etc., but just trying to show it makes sense.

And allows you to bring players to the club that you would normally be priced out of.

Appreciate, if the player goes for mega money, it's different, but how often does that happen.

17 Aug 2026 17:09:41
Totally agree, Sunshine, and neither we ever should, mate. 😲

17 Aug 2026 17:25:36
So, SWS, if we could have got Chermiti for £6M with a 50% sell on, you would have said no and rather spent £11M with a 20% sell on?

I know what deal I'd rather go for!

As a business operating in player performance, this type of deal makes more
sense as it protects you more for when players don't reach their potential or they run their contract down.

17 Aug 2026 17:26:09
40-50% wow, Zikos.

In no way, shape or form, should a Scottish club ever offer that, not like we sell players for £50m on the regular.

This lad was in League 1 last year and if Brighton are demanding that kind of money we should really move on.

17 Aug 2026 17:28:29
Zikos, the key word Phylis, if we sell, also Brighton want the money as it affects their PSR now.

17 Aug 2026 17:38:00
Key word if we sell.

17 Aug 2026 16:37:11
John, you would think nowadays a deal could be done with a higher sell on, go to 40 or 50% for example.

If the lad later for big money, it's win win.

I think using a model like that would appeal to the selling club more and would make it more likely to get these young talents.

17 Aug 2026 16:43:53
But our model is to make money? This makes that much harder. We are struggling as it is making money.

17 Aug 2026 17:00:46
There is no way we would agree to a 40 - 50% sell on.

17 Aug 2026 17:42:34
Yeah, I get that, John. There are players out there where PSR probably doesn't come into it.

I think we could have done something with the Dahl deal with this regard.

We really wanted him.

The player wanted to come here, but we couldn't afford the fee. Paying a reduced fee with a higher sell on could have worked.

Remembering you only pay the sell on fee from the profit.

17 Aug 2026 18:15:11
Sorry Zikos, but imo that is way off, mate, no chance would we offer that. 😲

17 Aug 2026 18:39:59
Closing in on Kelsy.

17 Aug 2026 19:14:23
SWS, I agree with you, we probably won't.

And we'll keep missing out on key targets and be signing 3rd or 4th choice players.

We need to do something differently to keep up with clubs in Europe because we're not getting cash from TV. So we need to use what little resources we have more efficiently.

18 Aug 2026 07:54:56
So what if a selling club agrees, then the player gets injured and never makes the dizzy heights originally forecast?
