When McInnes has went into teams he has always started by making them hard to beat. Why have Rangers got worse and easier to beat? I honestly don't understand what he is trying to do.
I don't understand his strange tactical changes either when it seems to cost us also.
This is the worst start that I can remember and I didn't think we would ever have a worse start than last year. We must win tomorrow but I ain't confident and for me St Mirren start as favs

I was chatting with a mate from the other side today who was making a similar point. McInnes is used to playing a system which is hard to beat and now he's trying to play progressive football which isn't working. I don't really get why we'd try and play this way. I want us to be hard to beat. I want teams to know they'll need to run through a brick wall to beat us. Truthfully, I'm okay with us sitting deep and encouraging Dundee United, St Mirren and Hibs to come and beat us.
We have (or should have) better players. We will get chances to score. We will score from set plays. Why not make us hard to beat again and go back to winning 1-0. I guess the argument will be the same old 'that's not the Morden way'. That argument is getting boring. We just need to find a way to win. I don't care if it's the Chelsea way from 2005 or the Man City team from 2018. Just win, nothing else matters.

I haven't seen us trying to play progressive football?
He's pretty much set us up like he set Hearts up last season and in every game we've had periods where we were dominant, but we failed to capitalise on them.
Unfortunately in every game we've also had periods where we lose shape and concentration and have made some awful errors that cost us goals.
But over the 4 games we've been way more direct than we've been for a long time, got the ball in the box more than we have for a long time and we've taken far more risks in the final 3rd than we have for a long time.

I don't know how he can make us hard to beat without a defence of any quality.

You're correct, EHL. The problem is we don't have the creative players to carve out chances for the strikers.

Good post, Ehl.
It must be such an uncertain environment to build confidence in.
No wonder we are in such a mess. We won't see anywhere near this team's best until the window closes.
Cannot imagine rocking into my office in the same kind of circumstances, not knowing who will be staying and who will be replacing mates and team mates.
This to me looks like a long term goal setting, and I don't believe the owners or DM believe we will get near to winning the league this season, they are simply setting a cost effective foundation for next season.

Kaiser, teams in our league have even less quality in defence, mate, and are harder to beat than us. Rohl managed to make us harder to beat, then tried to play more attacking, and it went down like a lead balloon.
Good points made by all, though, so thanks for the replies.
I honestly thought he would make us hard to beat, but we are so open and suspect of a counter attack.

Ehl, why don't we get the ball to the by line and cut it back for the strikers that clearly need service? Maybe we are trying that and it's not coming off?
15 Aug 2026 11:57:06
Reidpt, you mean like Gassama and Yakota did several times midweek?
15 Aug 2026 12:17:34
Storm, at least those teams can name a full defence generally. And we are expected to attrack as well as being hard to beat.
15 Aug 2026 13:30:06
When we or any team get to the byline it causes mayhem for defenders. Still think we cut in far too much, Ehl, do not need a wand of a left or right foot to cut the ball back and can see where Reidpt is coming from as it's a pet hate of mine as well.

The current two strikers are too similar and are getting in each other's way, we need someone to run in behind and push the defences back. Don't say Miovski please.
15 Aug 2026 13:40:17
Those teams counter attack, Kaiser, we need to stop making excuses.
