Scottish Football's European Reality Check

{Ed's Note - MrPotatoHead has posted a new article entitled, Scottish Football's European Reality Check

That's horrific reading MPH! A very well written, and on the button post. Nice one mate.

Scottish football is an embarrassment, with the clowns at the very top, destroying it bit by bit, season by season - no wonder we make a pittance in tv revenues etc. Who would want to invest in a product of such inferiority?!

It's a sad testament when some women's football throughout the world is paid more than our top league here in Scotland. If a product like women's football, where the skill set is so bad, gets paid more than our leagues, then the game is a bogey up here.

This isn't a new phenomenon!, and Scottish football has been in the crapper for decades. Let's face it, only our runs in Europe has helped keep the European coefficient in a healthy state, but that is no more. We are in a horrendous state!

My only question to ask here, is. Where's the money coming from to sort it?

MPH, having worked in various roles within the SFA over the years, I have zero confidence in them delivering any positive change within our game.

We've spent millions over the years on reviews and 'white papers' - most of which have provided real actionable insight.

However at every possible turn the SFA has prioritised maintaining the flow of funds to the pockets of those who we've trusted our national game to.

I'm now back in a part time role with the SFA again and without exaggeration, I think our game is beyond saving.

Can I just thank the Ed's for formatting / jazzing it up better than I submitted.
Looks and reads a lot better?
Great job??.

{Ed033's Note - ok thanks.

Aye, totally agree Sunshine and EHL.
We are, like most getting left behind at a European level.
But we will soon find ourselves at a crossroads domestically where if we don't embrace some sort of revolution/ change then Scottish football will become unsustainable for a lot of clubs.

Agreed MPH! Any article the Eds have deemed good enough to be posted of mine, look way better after the Eds have sorted them.

Thank you guys!

{Ed033's Note - Ok thanks.

Brutal reading, MPH, but bang on the money. The decline isn't just about bad results it's years of poor leadership, wasted reviews, and clubs failing to adapt. Sitting below Gibraltar in the rankings says it all.

Yes, TV money is dire, but investment doesn't only come from broadcasters. Other nations with smaller markets have built success through youth development, smarter recruitment, and a clear identity. We've done the opposite.

Women's football being used as a comparison misses the point it shows what proper investment can achieve. That's the lesson Scotland needs to take.

Is the game beyond saving? Not yet.
Rangers still have a Europa League lifeline, Celtic are steady if unspectacular, and the raw passion of fans is still there. But unless the SFA and clubs stop recycling excuses and start building long-term vision, we'll be stuck in this same conversation every season.

Unfortunately I think that's honestly the reality off it mph. A couple of seasons were we don't get into Europe with them making it harder every year would be catastrophic for us and them. In the next few years there's a possibility of this happening ?.

Mr P. H. - you're a Golden Wonder! OK if I call you Spud?

Good info EHL, What has to be done to Save our game in your opinion. ?????????.

15 Nov 2025 14:32:31
Great read ??.

15 Nov 2025 15:21:39
Unfortunately that's how I feel EHl we need a real change at the top
Unless the Americans and Bloom etc can have some sway possibly lobby for reforms better tv deals bringing in better advertising deals could bring in more revenue and folk wanting to invest in Scottish football
All this could push for reforms at the SFA

It's the only positive way I can see our game improving.
