Heard the stumbling block with Souttar's move away is the fee we are asking

Good business by the club, no more the pushover

25 Jul 2026 23:45:53
It will only be good if he goes and we get the fee we are asking for.

25 Jul 2026 23:49:04
We also haven't managed to get a replacement yet, so might need to bring him back.

25 Jul 2026 23:55:40
Until he leaves, he should be included. Don't get he was excused from trip to Spain to work on a deal, and he still hasn't left given we're needing backup.

26 Jul 2026 00:19:00
I'd force him to stay. Too much upheaval in the squad.
We need experience and familiarity. We can't sign 5/6 new mf players and 3/4 new cb's, 3/4 new fullbacks and expect to start the season well.

26 Jul 2026 00:55:35
Yeah, forcing players to stay is the answer.

26 Jul 2026 02:00:33
He's under contract, well looked after and well paid. He can deal with it like a man, and get a big signing in fee next year. I really wouldn't care.

Deal with it, John, is my take.

26 Jul 2026 02:14:19
He'll be here until we have a replacement.

26 Jul 2026 07:08:51
Stevie had taken a three-week break, which he is entitled to, and has only had his annual medical and light running.

26 Jul 2026 07:17:25
Get rid, never been good enough. Can start talking to clubs in Jan, so get anything for him.

26 Jul 2026 08:35:11
We r looking at a two million package, based on he was at World Cup, I'd take 1.5.

26 Jul 2026 08:54:31
I don't think he's ever been worth £2m, and given we've made it obvious we don't want him, and he's only got a Yr left, we'll be lucky to get 500k.

26 Jul 2026 08:58:25
Hardly good business. 😂

26 Jul 2026 09:18:41
Just getting him out the door would be good business.

26 Jul 2026 09:46:43
If we don't want him and he isn't going to be included in matchday squads, then we get his wages off our wage bill and a gee if £1m should be fair to get him off the books.

I don't believe he is being kept until we source a replacement if we aren't using him in any squads without that replacement.

26 Jul 2026 10:09:08
Thanks, John. Had heard it was min £3mil.

But trust your intel.

Souttars now on a decent weekly salary, so his total package to buying clubs will be a significant wedge.

26 Jul 2026 10:15:50
From what I have heard, he is staying until we get another defender in.

26 Jul 2026 10:20:52
Have spoken to Souttar a few times recently, and I don't think this is the case.

26 Jul 2026 10:39:09
Ah yes, demanding probably an extra 200k for a useless player that will walk for free is great business.

Stockpiling 11 centre midfielders is great business.

Having 0 suitable wingers, 1 decent centre half and 1 left back 5 days before the season is great business.

26 Jul 2026 11:01:17
Receiving £1.5m for Souttar would be a great bit of business, given his contractual status.
He is a regular on the international scene, has European experience, and is still at a good age for a CB.
Not a lot of money for any EFL Championship club.

We will spend more on a replacement, which we badly need.
I expect some interest in Manny from Palace now that La Croix is off to Chelsea, so we might need 2 'starting' CB's.

26 Jul 2026 11:17:13
Sorry EHL.
For the slow minded like myself, you need to be a bit less cryptic.
Whose post are you referring to that is not the case?
Fee the stumbling block?
3 week holiday and only just returned for medical?
We are looking for 2 million package?
Staying until another defender in?
Maybe it's just that you posted before some of the replies and you're referring to the original post.

Can you clarify?

26 Jul 2026 11:18:09
I am not his biggest fan, but if we are selling him to replace him with some 20 year old CB that has played about 20 senior games, then it's not for me. If we sell Souttar, then we need another experienced player at CB. Big Fernandez is still learning his game at 24.

Godfrey is as likely to fail as he is to be a good signing, he also hasn't played consistent minutes over a full season for a long time.

As it stands, it looks like we have replaced Djiga with Godfrey, we can't risk a young kid coming in to replace Souttar.

26 Jul 2026 11:27:51
CO2, lol, I was replying to the original post, but to be fair it could be applied to pretty much everything else that's been said.

Amazes me how much completely made up nonsense has been posted about Souttar over the years.

Really not sure what he's done to merit it? Assume a few posters got sold a dodgy coffee from his cafe.

26 Jul 2026 11:38:14
The mate I'm going to the match with today reckons he works with a guy who's ITK, so to speak, says Souttar is weighing up his options as it's a big decision for himself and his family (he may even stay put). Also said that we're still looking at players who currently play in the SPL, including a LB and a defender.

26 Jul 2026 12:01:01
I don't understand the hate that Souttar gets. Is he amazing? No. Has he made some high profile mistakes? Yes, but how many of our CBs over the last few years haven't? Does he try his best? Yes, imho. Up until the last third of last season or so, he had been picked by every manager when he was fit.

It's up to the club to sign a better CB. Two of the three (Djiga and Cornelius) that they signed last summer weren't any better than Souttar, imho. I would be assuming the club won't let him leave until we sign another CB given how few we have.

26 Jul 2026 12:20:09
It's not hate, Hammer, it's just the fact he is not and never has been good enough, mate.

26 Jul 2026 12:32:57
Wouldn't still have a problem with him as a back up, but it's clear that he's been bombed out the squad while we have no other options, so can't see us getting much for him unfortunately.

26 Jul 2026 12:46:56
I don't hate Souttar or any of our players, however, the tail off in his form when he came back from injury was really worrying. To be honest, after we had given him a new deal, I thought he would be staying this season, especially under McInnes. I thought McInnes would have seen him as someone he could get back to form and would help keep the Scottish core in the team.

I didn't expect him to be first pick every week, but I did think he would be part of our 4 centre back options. I'm really surprised at how quickly he seems to be heading for the exit door.

26 Jul 2026 12:59:34
I don't think dm would mind having js in the squad, even if only for a year, hence the valuation. I could obv be wrong, and we could end up with worse.

26 Jul 2026 13:10:29
Hammer, I hope you don't mind me quoting your post here, but what you said in this paragraph is exactly why we have been failing on the park for years and with recruitment.

Has he made some high profile mistakes? Yes, but how many of our CBs over the last few years haven't? Does he try his best? Yes, imho. Up until the last third of last season or so, he had been picked by every manager when he was fit.

He makes far too many mistakes, his positional awareness is poor, and his best isn't good enough.

Every manager that picked him ultimately lost their job. I'm not saying it's all Souttar's fault, but in that paragraph where you defend Souttar, you have actually highlighted the reasons why we have been failing.

Your statement proves we have recruited the wrong managers because they kept picking a player who was never good enough, and it proves that we are not recruiting properly if we have continually signed CBs who make high profile mistakes.

26 Jul 2026 13:31:23
I'd like to see Souttar with a season of no injuries. He played through an injury to start with, and that seems to have gone to his detriment with some fans. Problem I had last year was his pace. Playing against low block teams, you need quick defenders to make up the ground on counter attacks.

26 Jul 2026 13:33:12
I think he's been ok for us over all EHL but after his injury he's not been the same and better is required.

26 Jul 2026 15:00:04
Not a Souttar hater, but we need an upgrade; therefore, I'd like to see him leave.

26 Jul 2026 15:47:21
I agree we need solid, consistent & confident CBs. Souttar, I thought, wasn't too bad, but after injury, his form dipped. Dm has a good record of improving players defensively, so I had hoped he would remain in squad & we might see an improvement, but would appear that may be unlikely.

I could see Dm getting more out of last season's group than other managers have had, but for some it may be too late.
