How many times during a game does Butland kick the ball out of play, why can he not just hit it down the centre towards the centre forward, he slices it every time, we need a new goalkeeper.

I have an opinion on this subject. Butland's primary job is to make saves. I think he does this very well.
We need to be very careful what we wish for. There are plenty of goalkeepers out there who are great with their feet, but they are below average when it comes to shot stopping.
I'd rather a goalkeeper who keeps the goals out than a goalkeeper who can kick the ball.
Any goalkeeper who can do both currently plays for a top European side. They are few and far between.

Mowzer,
Butland's shot stopping is a bit of mixed bag anyway, some games he's great, others his only involvement is picking the ball out the back of the net.
More importantly, the amount of times Butland's terrible distribution puts us under pressure or gives away possession, he creates plenty of chances for the opposition.
I like Jack but we do need better.

Saves, he just stood there and watched the ball go over his head. He's a liability, especially when he has the ball at his feet.

Mon, played to our weakness today, which was to press our goalkeeper.
10 May 2026 19:07:25
He's not doing a good job of keeping goals out lately, mower is he. I can see the image of Butland sitting on his arse and 4 players in front of him all looking at each other in my sleep.
10 May 2026 19:14:43
Laudrup, I bet Tav is pointing.
10 May 2026 19:27:17
Noodles, I was thinking the same thing as soon as he goes to overhead kick it at that angle, Butland needs to anticipate it and move closer to the post, no, just stand there and do f*** all. He's done that a few times this season.
10 May 2026 19:44:08
Didn't even try 2 go for it, just stood and looked, mate.
10 May 2026 19:47:55
Noodles and Laudrup, not one goal today was Butlands fault, so what are you two on about?
10 May 2026 20:23:56
So JB did everything he could to try keep out the overhead kick or did he just stand and look. ?
10 May 2026 20:25:01
Agree Storm, never his fault for any of the goals, and not sure what he could have done for the overhead kick. No goalie in the world is getting anywhere near that. Sometimes you just have to applaud the scorer, much as it pains me to say it.
10 May 2026 20:26:25
His kicking is awful, but we insist on constantly doing it. We just kept conceding possession to them.
10 May 2026 20:32:40
I'm not talking about today, Storm, as I made the right decision not to watch that dross. I'm talking about all season. Butland on his arse, players looking around, and Tav pointing. Seen that image for years now, different players, but Tav still there pointing.
10 May 2026 20:49:02
He was arrogant and thought the ball was going over or wide in my opinion. I have never played keeper, maybe someone who has could give their thoughts. ?

When Brenden Rodgers first took over Celtic, he spoke about playing with 11 footballers, as opposed to playing with 10 footballers and a keeper. He was alluding to having a sweeper keeper. So, he signed someone to replace Craig Gordon, who was a fantastic shot stopper (in the mould of Allan McGregor, Lurch, or Jack Butland). The sweeper keeper experiment quickly failed and Celtic ended up sticking with Craig Gordon.
We will either get a good shot stopper or someone who is good with the ball at their feet. Anyone who is good at both jobs will quickly be heading to England. It's like full-backs, if you want one that can attack and defend they'll be off to England too. These type of players are highly sought after.
10 May 2026 21:06:39
Noodles, if you think that he should've saved the overhead kick, then we live on different planets, my friend.
Butland had no chance for any of the goals today. Or for the ones at Tynie last week. Or the ones the week before against Motherwell.
10 May 2026 21:10:48
Dio, Jack Butland is the best shot stopper in the league by some distance.
There's nobody I'd rather have between the sticks. The Hearts keeper is decent but he flaps at crosses very regularly. I'm having Butland over him personally.
10 May 2026 21:21:31
Pains me to say it but no goalie in the world would have saved the Japs overhead kick. Not one.
It dropped right in the top corner. You could have gave Butland a ladder and he still wouldn't have saved it.

Souness and Foolmonty - absolutely 100% correct, to suggest otherwise is just plain radio rental.
10 May 2026 22:21:39
Maybe he should have turned into Spring Heeled Jack to catch that one (Google it if you haven't heard the term!). ?
