Really interesting conversation with Stefan Borson on the Rangers Journal pod about Rangers finances. Highly recommend a watch regarding Rangers and FFP rules.

Agree1 Disagree0

What's his take on ffp for us?

16 May 2025 20:05:36
Stefan Borson knows his stuff, but there's something about him that annoys me and I've never been able to place it.

16 May 2025 20:33:13
Scotland hasn't got ffp rules there's no legislation, if you go to Celtic blogs there on there crapping themselves because they know there's a loophole.

16 May 2025 20:51:29
Know what you mean EHL.

16 May 2025 21:08:02
He's saying that he thinks the 49ers might spend decent sums of money to get into the champions league because the financial benefit of that outweighs any fines from UEFA from breaching FFP rules.

He goes into the club's turnover with season ticket money, match day revenue etc. It's more complicated than I thought but there does seem to be logic in it.

16 May 2025 21:09:00
I just watched it he basically said the pens are worthwhile the 49ers going for it to try and get into cl said UEFA fine clubs but nothing major. Ehl do you know if that's true?

16 May 2025 21:15:45
Lithium, there's no loop hole tho. If we want to play in europe then there's strict rules.

16 May 2025 21:18:18
Was it positive or negative? ?.

16 May 2025 21:32:35
Basically saying we can spend big as money from cl will be a lot more than any fine in 2 years time.

16 May 2025 21:55:12
Couple of points to consider.

Reputational impact.

Risk of overspending and not qualifying.

Lastly and most importantly, there is a belief that we don't need to breach the rules.

16 May 2025 22:20:50
Paul I agree. I think the flaw in his argument is that a club needs to apply every year for the licence to compete in Europe. My understanding is that one of the conditions is that our operational costs must be 70% of our turnover or less . if we don't hit that ratio then we don't get that licence. by the time we take them to court and fight that Europe is over for that year. so no Europe so the money we get from 49ers investment is lost through not getting the funds won through competing in European competition.

16 May 2025 23:43:38
EHL if and it's a big IF…. investment in the playing squad is done wisely then it is achievable without breaching FFP or damaging the clubs rep…it does mean koppen etc will need to be shrewd and spot on regarding recruitment. There will still need to significant money spent, think it can be done though.

16 May 2025 23:56:41
Is ther not a club taking uefa 2 court for ffp saying unfair and holding bigger clubs back although a read that somewhere ?.

17 May 2025 01:39:15
There is no ffp in Scotland, there are no rules to breach because there's no legislation, only applys in Europe, and as there fines are not significant enough to deter the 49ers, so the strategy the 49ers are considering is just going for it, it's a risk reward situation, and Rangers getting 10 games in the champions league against an insignificant fine, means the risk is worth it, because when they get into champions league then they attract bigger sponsors, naming rights etc, this is what I was trying to explain to storm but ah well it is what it is, I hope I've cleared that up for you guys.

17 May 2025 01:56:22
And also we're not up against say Real Madrid Bayern Liverpool psg etc it's Celtic and it won't take as much investment to get on top of them, then when you get established again as the team on top you run the club as normal, it's all about big early investment to get your foot in the champions league door, then you dominate Celtic and Scottish league, like I said these guys have a master plan there not here to be second, night guys.

17 May 2025 06:05:08
Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules do exist in Scottish football, but they are not the same as UEFA's FFP rules. In the Scottish Professional Football League, financial regulation is governed by club licensing criteria, enforced by the Scottish FA.

17 May 2025 08:17:07
The issue is there are other penalties they can impose other than fines including exclusion and transfer bans. fines can be linked against turnover as well. so all very well in theory but there are risks from the strategy and we aren't in a top 5 league so they may make an example.
they are here to be second but I also don't think they are here to throw money at us as their strategy will be to grow gradually like they have done with Leeds.

17 May 2025 09:01:50
Other issue to note would be we spend big money on players and wages to get them here and they get injured cant't adapt to Scottish football or just don't want to play in Scottish weather etc.

Cos that's never happen before.

17 May 2025 10:18:21
Lithium I'm not sure about the ffp rules etc and hopefully there is big money spent etc, However the way you spin it it's just as if Celtic are going to watch us spending a fortune to become the dominant force whilst they sit on their hands! I think we need to expect tough challenges ahead and whilst I'm confident long term this is no quick fix.

17 May 2025 11:13:21
Ffp does not exist in scotland not legally google it allyg72.

17 May 2025 11:17:17
Anyone wanting to take uefa to court over ffp vould simply point to real madrid and the spannish authority waving thier tax burdens and then point to uefa rules in government interference and uefa wouldn't have a leg to stand on.
