Was listening to the football phone in earlier guys and someone phoned in with there all time favourite Rangers team. Some good players albeit a few before my time, however, anyone like to name there favourite rangers team? there's some amount of quality players to choose from but to get started, I've come up with a team just of the top of my head. Playing a 3-5-2 formation.

Goram

Gough Butcher Amorouso

Laudrup Gascoigne Wilkins Van Bronkhorst Albertz

McCoist Hately

Subs (to name but a few)
Mols, Wilkins, Numan, Trevor Steven, Gary Stevens, Super Davie Cooper, Negri (purely for scoring over 30 goals before xmas)i Graham Roberts, Bomber Brown, Reyna, Caniggia, the De Boer brothers

Would love to have seen the best of Kuznetzov and Daniel Prodan as well and other names keep floading back to me but to many to mention. Based on my subs, would probably shuffle the starting 11 to fit others in and change formation.

Anyone got their favourite Rangers team?

SCDFB

1.) I'm only 21, but have been a season ticket holder since 1999. I tend to only pick players I have regularly watched live, whether on TV or in the flesh, when selecting best XIs of any kind. So bearing that in mind, my best Rangers XI would be (4-3-3);

Goalkeeper: Allan McGregor

Great goalkeeper, edges it ahead of Stefan Klos based on the fact he was worth more points in a season due to playing in a weaker team and being under pressure on a more regular basis. Whenever called upon he pulled us out of trouble with wonder saves 9 times out of 10.

Right Back: Fernando Ricksen

Everything you need in a full back. Good on the ball, hard as nails, good in the air, brave, fit as a butchers dog and full of heart.

Centre Back: Lorenzo Amoruso

Brilliant centre back, very continental. Good on the ball but brave as a lion and really loved the club.

Centre Back: David Weir

The fact he was signed as a 6 month stop gap and went on to play 200+ games, most of them as captain, says it all about this legend. Only negative is that we didn't sign him earlier in his career.

Left Back: Arthur Numan

Probably the only player I have seen at Rangers who I would deem as world class, he was one of the best left backs in world football in his prime. Honoured to have seen him play for our club.

Centre Midfield: Barry Ferguson

Underrated as a player and a captain for me. Technically gifted, often suffered from caring too much when others seemed to not care at all. Had the whole package as a modern midfield player, no coincidence that he excelled when playing with better players, didn't look out of place as captain of a great Gers team at a young age.

Centre Midfield: Jorg Albertz

One of my childhood heroes, scored the winner in my first game, against Hearts. Brilliant player, probably the last midfielder to offer us a regular 10-15 goals a season threat, was missed when he left, prematurely in my eyes.

Attacking Midfield: Ronald de Boer

What a talent. Just oozed class and you could see in everything he did that, despite his lack of pace, his brain was so far ahead of the rest. Scored some wonderful goals and was a joy to watch.

Forward: Michael Mols

My ultimate childhood hero and, ability wise, the best player I have seen at Rangers. Had it not been for the injury in Munich who knows what this man could have achieved in the blue jersey. Also a true gent.

Forward: Kris Boyd

In for the simple fact that his goal record can't be ignored, he was a freak in front of goal. Always the question mark against his all round game, but football is about goals and I've seen nobody better at getting them for Rangers.

Forward: Kenny Miller

For me, the most underrated player we have had in recent years. During his second spell his importance to us on our way to three in a row (including the first half of the 10/11 season before he left) was huge. His work rate was always reliable but he scored important goals and always produced in big games.

2.) Re StevenC, for someone your age I can understand many of your selection, however I am not sure if you are saying that Barry Ferguson would be captain of the team you list, ABSOLUTELY NOT.

3.) Goram
Butcher Gough Roberston Forsyth
Laudrup Gascoine Baxter Waddell
Mccoist Hatley
Subs
Numan B ferguson Albert Stein Jardine

4.) Jelavic was far better than Boyd.

5.) Goram

Grieg Butcher Brown Numan

Laudrup Souness Gascoigne Cooper

McCoist Mols

Subs - Woods, Durrant, Gary Stevens, B Ferguson, Hately, Gough, Albertz

Based upon players I have watched and the best football they played in their careers but not neccssarily for Rangers

6.) My best:goram, Greig, gough, butcher, numan, gazza, laudrup, cooper, Baxter, mccoist, hatley. subs McLean, stein, novo, amoroso and woods

7.) Being from an older generation, my team would be:
Niven, Shearer, Caldow, Greig, McKinnon, Baxter; Henderson, MacMillan, Miller, Brand, Wilson!

Though to be fair this team is a better representation across the decades:

Goram; Jardine, Caldow; Greig, Butcher, Baxter; Laudrup, Gascoigne, McCoist, De Boer, Johnston

8.) What about the least favourite team? Malcolm Ross etc

9.) @1 none of your players would get near an all time great Rangers side especially MacGregor who was vastly overrated. I started watching Rangers late seventies and would include nearly all of the Rangers players that were in the actual team of all time. However I wasn't old enough to see Baxter and didn't really see too much of Grieg either. Also I am mystified why Hateley gets in the team in front of Derek Johnstone.

10.) I meant to include the versatile Derek Johnstone and of course Richard Gough. What we'd give for players of that calibre now!

11.) I'm 22 so agree with Steven C but I think I'd take out Boyd & Miller for Jelavic & Prso 2 fantastic players.

12.) Doiger. I'm from the same generation as you, only I'm a Celtic man and you are right. Every Celtic supporter knew that Rangers team off by heart and it never seemed to change. All teams mentioned so far this was the best. Vinciebhoy.

13.) Best team goram jardine numan greig mackinnon ferguson hederson macmillan mols van brockhurst laudrup subs wilkins wood wallace gascoinge forrest butcher they would give any team a run ta

14.) Doiger the famous team surely had Bobby Ritchie instead of George Niven?
Big George was a great keeper but it was Ritchie, Shearer, Caldow etc that trips off the tongue.

15.) @ Stewie

If you read the full post again, you will see that I picked based on my time watching Rangers, not all-time.

Also, are you saying Numan, Mols, Albertz & de Boer for instance wouldn't get "anywhere near" an all-time Rangers team? Maybe not first choice for everyone, but they would certainly be in the thoughts of many, I guarantee it. In terms of ability alone they are four of the best to ever play for the club.

If I was to pick a team based on all-time, from what I've seen in my lifetime as well as what I have seen on DVDs etc, I would go for;

Goram

Jardine
Butcher
Gough
Greig

Laudrup
Gascoigne
Baxter
Cooper

McCoist
Mols

16.) @ 14 it is Billy Ritchie no Bobby it was Bobby Shearer

17.) Read all posts above and wonder why no mention of mark walters

18.) Good shout tmwnn there are so many but Walters on form was a heck of a winger. But nobody mentioned the silky skills of wee Bobby Russell and even Durranty just gets a subs spot. Going back to Barcelona Bears the wonderful left peg of Davie Smith ah the good old days! Big Tam Forsyth was another good defender and wee Claudio Reyner was very decent. For pure skill if not consistent performance there was also Alexi Mikalechenko (however you spelt his name)

19.) @17 not a bad shout mate as I am pretty sure that Mark Walters scored more goals during his time at Ibrox against Celtic than any other player during that time. Scored some great goals for the club and some great performances

20.) 18 nbear there are lots of players to many to chose from but I liked big tam forsyth also wee bud johnson we could be doing with some of them just now eh mo johnstone lots and lots the op did have me scrambling my brain just memories amazing brill

21.) Why hadnt cribari mate it into anyonrs dream team? Lol

22.) Suprised Rod Wallace doesn't feature more throughout these selections! Thought he was a brilliant foward

Fellow bears I'm new to this board but felt the need to post based on some of the responses levelled at Ally and the team. Whilst everyone is entitled to their opinion, I cannot for the life of me understand the level of criticism dished out to Ally McCoist. I've read on here about guys wanting Derek McInnes or Billy Davies as Rangers manager and the fact the quality of football we playing in league one is horrendous! I think we all know it's not great viewing however, Ally McCoist has had practically both hands tied behind his back since he got the Rangers Job. Yes we have the second highest wage bill in Scotland but for me too many gers fans are stuck in the past in terms of previous teams and players we've had. I agree with Ally with what he was saying in the newspapers about not having a Laudrup or Gascoigne. Those days are gone along with the Souness, Smith and Advocaat days. For me, Jose Mourinho could get the Rangers job and some fans would still be shouting for his head because we couldn't beat Albion Rovers for example. Look at the facts, we have won back to back titles which was the main objective, we are unbeaten in the league this season, yet some people are still shouting for McCoists head. I've no doubt we will get back to the top of Scottish football but we need to give Ally a break in my opinion. Someone posted here that he is in danger of losing his legendary status. total nonsense, can't believe anyone who was brought up in the Ally McCoist days would even say this!. The same could be said about John Greig? Get a grip guys and get back into the real world. Ed, you make valid points mate and I agree with your comments but a lot of other fans need a reality check. As I say everyone is entitled to their opinions but I just don't get it with a lot of fellow bears comments. We will get their slowly but surely but we need to walk before we can run. I'm sure Ally knows the quality of football is not good enough but I'm convinced a few of the guys in the current squad will be moved on once we're back in the premier league. That's not say they haven't done a great job getting us back up the leagues, it's just a fact some are not good enough for when we get back to the top.

Very admirable loyalty m8. And well written too. I hate accusing ally but the truth must out. He doesn't know any other way than punts into daly. jig. or moshni. he took the c/f off against rovers and replaced him with faure? Then got very lucky. And for info I was there when greigy was gaffer. and believe me his reputation came very close to destruction. with the lowest crowds in our history. So while h admire ure post I think he must step aside

2.) SCDFB

As you state everyone is indeed entitled to their opinion. However, what seems to be the majority of the fan base is now in agreement that Ally McCoist and his coaching team do not have it to man manage players (SPFL standard) or strategise in games. If we are a goal down it's the same old long ball dross that belongs to a bygone era of football. I feel that you are yet another poster that cannot separate Ally the legend and Ally the manager.

Yes we do have the second highest wage bill in Scotland. The team is also full of players that Ally sourced through bosman signings. No one else recommended these players to him. there is no scouting network.

No one in their right mind is comparing this Rangers team to ones of the fast but the facts do not lie. We have won the league but take a step back and look at the opposition. They are part time players. I can open my back door which looks onto football fields to watch the same level of football player that we are against on a weekly basis.

The point I make is. this is Ally's team, not one which has been thrust upon him. The players have became lackadaisical under his stewardship. So what does that come down to? Managerial nous, ability, strategy, man management and all with no threat of the sack due to the clubs financial position.

I wish it were different but it is not.

3.) I with a little coaching experience would have won the league, Mccoist's hands where not tied when we got put out of europe by 2 pub teams, get him out now, he is rank rotten as a manager, what sticks in my throat more than anything about him is on the evening times telling fans he was buying shares as a fan and not as the rangers manager and he encoured the fans to do likewise.

4.) SCDFB

no one is stuck in the past m8 what people are fed up with is Allys lack of tactical awareness and his inability to bring the best out in a player not to mention his reluctance to play our youth. you mention back to back titles when you look at what Ally has at his disposal what do you expect. I have no football managerial experience whatsoever but I would feel confident of delivering back to back titles if I had Allys wage bill to pay players with.

Ally has managed to take some decent players like Sheils Law black Daly Foster Temps etc and turn them into mediocre players

no matter how you try and dress it up Ally does not have what it takes to be manager of Rangers, he has done nothing in the past or present to make me think he ever will have what it takes.

if Ally left I would like to see someone like Stuart McCall given the chance someone who is not afraid to play youth alongside some good journeymen, someone who will coach his players on how to keep the ball on the ground and try and play some attractive football. someone who wouldn't want £800000 plus bonuses for winning the fourth tier of scottish football and £400000 plus bonuses for the third tier.

5.) I agree with you on that one. Every Rangers manager will have his critics, and Ally has a lot. The football hasn't been great but we have got the job done.
His legendary status has significantly increased in my view due to his loyalty to the club through these tough times.

6.) Cbeattie

are you for real man " His legendary status has significantly increased" well that's your opinion and you are entitled to it but I think most Rangers fans would disagree. in my opinion his legendary status is slowly disappearing down the drain.

All this nonsense about loyalty Ally didn't do walking away for three reasons

1)£800000 plus per year
2)£1 Million in shares
3) HE HAD NOWHERE TO GO

you got one thing right m8 you say the club is going through tough times, in my opinion taking £800k per year and paying over inflated wages to very average players is just compounding our problems not alleviating them or increasing your legendary status

Lochaber Bear

7.) OP and 5 sometimes posts on here completely gas my flabber and IMO the advert should have gone to spec savers may apply to you two. Hey but its all about opinions my opinion is we had a wonderful opportunity to reinvent our club as one which had learned from its fatal financial imprudence and came back with a young and exciting attacking football team envisaged by Bill Struth when he talked about the ever increasing numbers of people who would come to Ibrox to marvel at the football product.
This legends dream has not been followed by a wee rotund chap from Scotland's largest new town who is so out his depth it is truly scary.
In fact the opposite is happening as those of us with 50 / 50 vision despair at the product being produced by the overpaid mercenaries on the pitch and in the dug-out.

8.) 5, what? lol

9.) Maybe the OP isn't aware but for the past 2 seasons we have been up against part time players. Now there is a reason they are part time. If you think he has had his hands tied behind this back then what about the Albion Rovers manager or the Clyde manager. They haven't exactly been able to splash the cash nor do they get a salary like Ally's. You can defend him all you want but the truth is he isn't up to the job and will be found out either in the championship or the premiership.

10.) Spiv - did one of your pub teams not beat hibs 0-7 at easter road?

and

was your other pub team not still in Europe this season long after all the Scottish teams were ko, d and only put out narrowly by sevilla 4-3? good going for pub teams!

JG

11.) 13 Mar 2014 21:43:43
@jg. very good reply m8. Just for the record.
However to op and 5. Total nonsense. If Anyone in the football world had taken the Rangers job with Allys resources and not won easily. and I include managers of junior teams. And not won leagues 3 and 2. Then we would have slaughtered them. He cudnt possibly fail. And I mean cudnt possibly fail. But along the way he has managed to take us to terrible depths and woeful football. And gave guys like "wee blackie " contracts they never dreamed of. And he was chucking it! U cudnt make it up

12.) On reflection lads, maybe I was a bit defensive in my post yesterday regarding Ally and I hold my hands up that I was maybe blinkered in defending Ally the player and Ally the manager. I still find it hard to accept what has happened to the Gers and dropping down divisions etc so the sooner we sort out the mess the better. WATP

13.) Barcelona described WSs tactics as "anti football" and rightly so, it was pish, but McCoist has taken that concept to new depths, you say the fans would moan at Mourinho, maybe, but McCoist would DEFINITELY make Messi look a bad player! He has a "don't lose" mentality which is why even with the squad he has Rangers get numbers behind the ball and very rarely dominate games even at this level. IMO McCoist deserves all the criticism he gets for his "tactics" alone.

It's a tricky one mate. I couldn't imagine a fan boycott but on the other hand if it means a change of board then so be it. Alternatively, I heard big Derek Johnstone on the football phone in say that he feels Graham Wallace would be a good asset to Rangers in the long run. I'm united with my fellow bears however, I don't know what to believe these days. Hopefully it gets sorted out sooner rather than later and we can get the club back on a good financial footing again.
