Why wouldn’t Rangers just use Lewis Mayo as short-term cover? That’s what the youth academy is for. Mayo has just had a full season of SPFL top division experience at Kilmarnock and done well.

There is a strong degree of logic in this with King's injury. Balogun will be at the club as back up, Beale knows him and knows he can trust him if needed. At the present time there is no guarantee that Davies will be at the Club beyond the transfer window and it is not confirmed that Goldson will definitely be match fit for the start of the Season and Souttar's injury problems are well documented.
As I understand it, Balogun is also a good guy to have around the dressing room and I can see him being a positive addition in motivating and helping develop our younger players.
We do not want a situation where we need to bring in Mayo or one of the other youngsters, they have a bad game and they are slaughtered by the support.
While we still need to bolster our defence it is clear that both Arsenal and Nottingham Forest are playing hard ball on the fees and we might not have the funds available to pay excessive fees for the players.

If we are chasing Balogun, does that mean that trying to sign another centre half is off the table, for example Trusty? Why would we need Balogun back?

Because we have massive Champions league qualifiers to play and we need experienced back up for Soutar and Davies while Goldson and King are out. Sterling can also play CB but more suited as part of a 3 as a RCB with RB his preferred position.
It’s a cheap low risk option for a guy who at 35 can do a job short term.

Mayo is 22 or 23 now? Had a decent season at Killie, I thought he’d be a reliable enough backup for now?
