Going with scrambed_eggs post . I'd like to see what a pro game without the offside rule would look like.

Been trialled a Few times . see the likes of van Basten are behind dropping it, on the grounds that those trail games did not result in a long ball hoof. but have delivered more goals and more exciting football.

Worth a go if just to get rid of the eternal VAR arguments, and stupid decisions which rob the game of great goals because someone's backside was 3mm offside?

You have a point there ted … the off sides are verging on surreal now.

Offside shouldn’t and won’t be removed from the game. For VAR they should either play from the standing foot so leaning would be allowed or if the lines overlap then benefit the striker. Tbh from var the bit that annoys me least is offsides as you’re either onside or offside there’s no real debate about it. UEFA’s automated system works well not sure why the premier league doesn’t have it implemented.

I think football has become guilty of overcomplicating the rules and being to arrogant to lean on other sports for direction.

I know the refs in general aren't great, but the majority of the debates on TV, radio and forums criticise them for applying the actual rules.

We moaned about the refs and linesman before var so I don’t see that point of the var arguments. Were they know arguments before var

Also they won’t get rid of offside.

I see arguments for both, I. e. it’s 11 v 11 so it’s up to the defender to mark the strikers so scrap offside and we’ll see more goals. Other side is that’s been the rule for so long it’s engraved into the game, it’s also the case defending is a skill and an art and good strikers make good runs.
I’d bet my mortgage if we scrapped offside the game would change massively, for strikers it would be all about speed and teams would defend against us and just lump the ball forward to a couple of whippets. That’s not football.

Remember the Dryburgh Cup, back in the day, they moved the offside line to the 18 yard box, instead of the half way line.
Dont think it made much difference if I remember correctly.

If all of the ball has to be over all of the line for a goal to stand then shouldn't all of the players body be over all of the offside line to be offside it would stop a lot of great goals being disallowed.

I agree about the comment about measuring offside by foot position . The game is called football so why not just keep it simple . If a forward is leaning or scores with his head so be it, everyone will know the rules and it will be easier to judge without argument. Watching the Arsenal game and the ball in or out dispute, I`ve always thought it strange that we ref one side of the pitch without a linesman because of the diagonal they work on. You can see players deliberately have the ball outside of the arc on the non linesman side because of this. Surely in this day and age it would be possible to extend Hawkeye to include the lines just like Tennis.

Wsl we know the rule just now it maybe called football but you can’t just score with your feet.

Rayngers very good point I think there should be clear daylight between striker and defender for it to be offside also. I think they have trialed it or doing a trial on it hopefully that comes in but there will still be small margins in offside decisions from it.

I remember that BAR, can't remember it making much difference either.

I'm not sure whether var has improved the game or not.
