Although his original post (further down this page) led to some quite amusing follow ups, Mark44 actually touched on a significant point. Celtic made a £6m profit last year and apparently have £30m in the bank. £30m sounds a lot, but let’s consider that in the context of where we are (especially with what Bennett and Robinson have been saying in the last few days) . Since 2012 Celtic have been continuously winning leagues, qualifying for Europe and had a successful player trading model (making big bucks on selling players way back since Wanyama, Van Dyke, Tierney, Dembele, even Stuart Armstrong and others) . That’s 10 years of basically raking in the cash. In the same period we’ve had 9 years of continuously loosing money and requiring soft loans to get by and only 1 year (the last one) of turning a profit based on an amazing European run, finally starting to see a proper player trading model working and qualifying for champs league (although we won’t see a lot of that money until maybe next year and beyond. No one turns up at Ibrox with a giant comedy cheque every time we sell a player or qualify in Europe, the payments take time to come through) . My point is, whilst they have had it all their own way and financially been extremely successful, they only have £30m sitting available to spend (and of course it’d be madness to go out and spend all of that on players) . Why then would we think that after one good year we should have all this extra cash floating about? Everyone loves to look at the figures quoted for the players we sell and qualifying in Europe and just think ‘great we now have £X amount to spend on players! ’ But business are expensive to run i'm afraid, especially football clubs. Now before anyone says it, I’m not ‘sticking up for the board’, there are a lot of things I wish they did better. I’m just trying to be a realist and understand that there isn’t all this cash just floating about or as some folk say ‘lining the board members pockets’. Of course I would of loved to see a couple of £5/ £6m signings turn up on deadline day, however I’ll love even more to never again go through what we all went through back in 2012. Personally I still think the club is heading in the right direction. We may not be exactly where we want to be just yet, we may still be playing catch up slightly and we may still have to be a bit patient (which I know is hard), but overall I still think the last few years have been more positive and definitely steps in the right direction.

Gers 1978 undoubtedly one off the very best posts I have ever read on here. Well done that man.

Spot on and as Robertson said we budgeted for minimum group stages of EL so the uplift in getting to CL is fairly small. Stability has to be key to our finances.

Good post?.

Defo could not take another 2012. Felt ill for months. Step by step we are getting there. Look where we have come from. They tried to bury us and we came back to KO the lot of them.

An old friend sat me down and said what is your 5 and 10 year plan? I was 20 and laughed. At 42 i now know and ask the question myself. Being secure financially is a prized position to be in. Our great club is doing the same. Protecting the future.

2012 will and cannot happen again.

Im one proud GER.

❤️??.

Gers78 very true and accurate post and well thought out and written
all I absolutely agree with when you take a step back
But in the heat of the moment we all like a complaint when things don’t go our way and when players don’t play to there true potential and especially when we think we’re falling behind our biggest rivals and those texts and calls start coming through from the ones you know from the dark side and your blood starts to boil
I’m sure you know the calls and texts etc I’m talking about
So we come one here to let off steam and perhaps we do at times go over board which can be easily done doesn’t mean we don’t support or back the team no matter how it comes across
Some are more expressive than others and some don’t like to hold back and that’s why this site is so good ???.

Well said Gers. I've not posted on the recent unravelling of some posters on here and sorry folks but that's what its been.
We used to laugh at the other shower for unravelling at the least wee thing.
The results/ performances of the last few weeks have hurt, yes, but let's maintain our level-headedness and leave the hysterics to them!
I don't know if i'm alone in this but I've cringed a bit over our directors coming out and discussing our finances over the last few days but its been in response to the madness that has engulfed us over the last few weeks. we've gone from Gio is now a sh! t manager from a genius to the board are pocketing cash to a takeover. geezo.
Chill out, no orizes are awarded in sept. The time to judge finances is year end accts. The time to judge a team's success is season end.

I know stig, we all love our club and we all get frustrated when things go wrong and results are bad and that will never change and nor it should, if we just always accepted poor results and performances then we would never improve or move forward. I just wanted to put some perspective on things. The journey we’ve had as a club in the last 10 years has been massive and unprecedented but unfortunately there is still a way to go, financially anyway. Doesn’t mean though that we can’t compete and still win trophies. The players we have just now are good enough to do so and have proved it already. They just need to make sure they keep applying themselves properly! I just feel that for a lot of the fan base to all of a sudden turn on the board after a couple of all be it very poor results, is a bit off.

Superb sensible and advised post. Too many fans think running rangers is like playing fifa. To pay for the stadium upgrades, new developments, disabled upgrades, building top class youth setup etc all takes millions. I said previously it's not the end of my world if we get beat of celtic, and we are punching in the champions league so expect a few beatings. Overall I like where we are now to even 5 or 6 years ago.

A realistic and optimistic post at the same time and so well done for that. We have made some needless blunders along the way mind-you; appointing Pedro would be the principal one and I am not convinced the board do not have another blunder up their sleeve for us.
