Brilliant, 4 days of the best golf competition in the world starts now. The open championships 150th year at the home of golf St Andrews. Fingers crossed mother nature gives them a wee treat and let the wind blow.

One of my neighbours is marshalling at St Andrews and I was speaking to her last night. She said she wouldn't be surprised if Tiger withdraws after one round as he looks like he is in agony just walking up the fairway. She said that if she was betting on it, it would be lumping on for him not to make the cut. The general chat is that this will be Tiger's last Open Championship.

if it stays dry and wind doesn't blow - the old course could get absolutely mullered with some of these guys.

14 Jul 2022 11:19:05
Aye if it does get warm these guys will batter it. Re Tiger I'm amazed that he is even walking let alone playing. It does look as if every step he takes is agony. I'd be amazed if he played 72 holes, but then it's Tiger.

Used to go most years to all the Scottish venues when you could just arrive on the day. Another sports competition being ruined by greed and corporate hospitality.

Best ever golfer guys and why? I'll start- Jack Nicklaus without a shadow of a doubt. Won 18 majors with countless second places and top tens. And that was with old steel shafts and when woods really were woods. I often wonder what he would have achieved nowadays with the amazing modern equipment. Superb ambassador for the game and an absolute gentleman. My number one by some distance.

{Ed001's Note - what about Ben Hogan?}

There's a few tasty pin positions today. So far iv'e had 3 x
four puts and i'm only on the fourth tee?
Good to see Boab Macintyre getting of to a good start.

Ed, Hogan was possibly the sweetest striker of a golf ball along with Lee Trevino. Great players, but nowhere near the achievements of The Golden Bear.

{Ed001's Note - I know nothing about golf, it is not my thing, I just asked as I had done an article about him for the sites and he came across as a great player who also came back from a horrible injury. An injury he got by throwing himself in the way to save his wife's life. So he sounds like a special person too.

Other than that all I know about golf is from going with my uncle as his mates were footballers so I would to along with him. Usually i would just caddy as i had no interest in the game. I was just along to talk footie.}

Anyone had a look at the Rangers golf range just released by castore?

14 Jul 2022 13:24:11
That's right ed, Hogan and his wife were involved in a horrific car crash and he did indeed suffer a serious injury trying to help her. The doctors said he would be lucky to walk again, never mind play golf. Not only did he play again but he won 3 major champipnships in 1953 including the Open at Carnoustie. My dad was playing with Dundee at the time and went down there with another couple of players to watch the golf. In those days people could just walk beside the players and my dad and his buddies followed Hogan round. Said some of his shots were fantastic. He was so good he could almost land the ball on a spot the size of a bucket. 9 major championships - an amazing player.
