My mum had lived in Spain for years and she returned to live in Harrogate because Spain went tits up. The UK government said she wasn't classed as British because she had lived out of the UK for more than ten years. They gave her nothing and she had to survive on a food bank. The UK/ English government is an absolute joke. They wouldn't give my 65 year old mother anything, plus she had no doctor or medical coverage for three months, no accomodation allowance or free transport. No housing help and universal credit would take up to six months. I've spent loads on helping food banks because I know what it means. A quid can give a kilo of pasta, instant mash, salt, sugar or so much more. The public help more than the government, that's why I'm so proud of the SNP. Independence is the best strategy.

Agree with your sentiments, don’t agree with the blind support of the snp, the food bank era is a deep shame on Britain including an SNP run Scotland, so I don’t understand the faith in their policies, foreigners don Have any problems getting social security at any time.

03 Dec 2020 08:04:54
I'm not sure that someone who has lived abroad for 10 years should expect to return to the UK and automatically get state help, much though I sympathise with your mum's situation.

03 Dec 2020 08:21:23
That's no worries SGL I knew it was you mate.
I'm so sorry to hear that Rossco, it should never have happened. But, I'm with Tom on this one mate, the SNP haven't exactly been shining lights when it comes to this. There are more foodbanks popping up all over Scotland just now, and it's not all down to the UK Government (although they are bloody useless) The SNP might want you to believe it's all the UK Government's fault, but they are passing the buck so their own failures are not highlighted more.
Regardless of who is at fault, poor families should not have to depend on foodbanks in the 21st Century!
I had a conversation with Glasgow South west foodbank's treasurer and he told me a story regarding a recent kids pack lunch event they ran.
A 7 year old girl, her sister and her mum turned up, and after eating only half her packed lunch (which was only a couple of sandwiches and a piece of fruit), the wee 7 year old girl slid the other half to her mum and said "you have this mum as you haven't ate anything from yesterday". That's heartbreaking!
I know there's some out there who are cynical and probably think the parents spend the money on drink, fags etc, but it's not like that. Parents are going without food so they can feed their kids, and at this time of year it's worse.
Guys, I appreciate all who have contributed to our own foodbank appeal, and If anyone else wants to contribute, the link is just above.

I had a look at the appeal on the Celtic forum and they are at £990 which is just amazing considering it's only been up 2 days! Well done to Ed007 and the guys on the Celtic forum for contributing!

Wow Rossco!

If she had moved to Glasgow would the SNP handed her anything in similar circumstances?

What about Spain? After 10 years should Spain not look after her?

03 Dec 2020 08:36:46
SNP? Independence?
Everything that is devolved to Scotland is failing under the SNP!
Education, Health Service, higher taxes than the rest of the UK etc.
And let's not mention their handling of CV!
The blind faith shown in the SNP Cult is astounding.
But each to their own👍.

03 Dec 2020 09:16:30
Cult is right and how any adult would think that Scotland would govern itself within the EU is beyond me.

Big shock coming to those who follow blindly.

03 Dec 2020 09:20:59
If rossco gets his independence he won't have a NHS. Scotland will have to set up its own health service like eire.

03 Dec 2020 09:28:04
Aw Rossco you were doing well u til that last bit 😂 anyway, despite your allegiance to wee Jimmy cranky I applaud you for your continued donations to the food banks, you are indeed a kind hearted gentleman!

03 Dec 2020 09:33:24
I sympathise totally with your poor mum's predicament and experiences mate, but i agree with the guys above where the SNP are concerned! Never will vote for them, even if they were the only party. Through my late grandfather's who were both miners and my own late father who had a wee spell as a miner, i was brought up in strict labour party households. All 3 of them were red hot labour men! I of course followed suit when i was voting age and have always voted labour. TBH i honestly don't think any of them in this day and age do any good for us in general 🤔When tony blair became prime minister in 1997,he took what he called new labour, far too right wing and closer to the torries. As i'm originally from lanarkshire and probably biased when i say this, but i thought john smith who would have been prime minister and a terrific one at that,
died 3 years before labour got in and a certain tony blair was john smith's understudy, when he was the labour leader! Smith, honestly guys was a terrific gentleman and i knew him 👍He would IMO have been one of the best prime minister's, this country had ever seen, but for his sad, untimely death 😞.

I have lived in England for the last 36 years so couldn't/ wouldn't vote for SNP in a million years. I too was brought up in a Labour, working class area of Dundee but when Jeremy Corbyn became leader of the Labour Party I stopped voting for them. Living down south, I suppose I don't have to listen to the prattling of week Krankie! Would-be Scottish Nationalists should think about what would happen if independence did happen. No NHS or armed forces for a start!

03 Dec 2020 10:17:05
Totally agree SGL about John Smith👍.

03 Dec 2020 10:31:23
Good post Coops, john Smith had integrity and was a sad loss to his party and Scotland.

03 Dec 2020 10:45:15
fellow bears the original is not about the snp or any political party its about chucking a coople of bob towards a charity started by one of our own its paysay for lucky ole me tomorrow and i won't miss another few euros c'mon bears dig deep and donate to the food appeal top of the page.

03 Dec 2020 11:34:07
Thanks again Brian, it's much appreciated!
It's easy to go off tangent guys when discussing things like this, but this is about some poor people from around the Ibrox area not able to feed themselves or their kids during a period when we're supposed to be happy.
Politics has obviously a big part to play in the reasons for foodbanks, but we're not politicians, we're decent people who can help!

Anent the SNP and foodbanks.

Some facts. Research (Rachel Loopstra and colleagues) found that food banks were more likely to open in areas wirh greater unemployment and welfare sanctions and reductions in local and central government (in England) spending - austerity in other words.

There were no food banks in Hartlepool in 2009. Now there are 9. What happened? Austerity. Tory government policies.

No Scottish government, Snp or whatever controls the economy. Welfare benefits are largely reserved to Westminster. So responsibility for food banks does not lie with the SNP.

I am not a member of any political party. I have been a volunteer in a food bank and have seen at first hand the malign and harmful effects of Tory policy regarding sanctions. I know about this stuff and will be glad to engage.

03 Dec 2020 15:43:53
The SNP are the ruling party in Scotland so therefore do have a responsibility regarding food banks.
Certain ills in society can't be all down to the big bad Tories?
Or does the SNP Yestapo just take credit for all the good things in Scotland?
I would have thought that an Education System that is failing, poor quality Scottish NHS and not spending the money raised in taxes which the SNP are in charge of correctly would all contribute to people needing to use food banks?
All governments ( Scottish and Westminster ) should do more to eliminate poverty in 2020.
But we have a party in Scotland who are more interested in independence than fixing the mess we are in. 👍.
