I'll give you a laugh guys. A jambo i know quite well told me half an hour ago that former rangers legendary manager sir walter smith, is going to be the new hearts director of football, with either tommy wright or john robertson becoming the new hearts manager 😂😂. I honestly nearly swallowed my big mug, as well as the coffee whole.
It got me thinking again about wattie however. Fellow bears, being totally unbiased,
where does walter smith sit in your opinion,
in your list of being one of the best, scottish manager's of all time? 🤔.

Agree7 Disagree0

Top 👍.

15 Jun 2020 20:23:39
He has got to be up in the top 3 Scottish managers to be honest.
Alex ferguson and no matter what you think of that lot jock stein as well.

15 Jun 2020 20:43:50
That would be my unbiased 3 KJA9!
The best 3 scottish manager's for me would be-1.Sir Alex Ferguson,2.Jock Stein and 3.Our Very Own Sir Walter Smith! 👌👍. There's not much between smith and stein IMO. I remember when sir alex ferguson took walter smith down to be his assistant at man utd.
Fergie said then, that smith and stein were practically equal and he said walter could easily be the manchester utd manager, in his own right, that's how highly sir alex rated walter smith! He thought smith was a terrific manager and of course as usual he was correct! 👌👍.

Probably just in front of Waddell.

15 Jun 2020 20:50:28
Lot of top Scottish managers Fergie busby shanks stein and Walter prob forgot plenty as well.

15 Jun 2020 20:51:46
Yup coop.

Stein
Smith.

Walter, fantastic man and manager.

Matt Busby maybe the best for me, coming back from the Munich disaster to win the European Cup in 1968 was some achievement. Think he signed Charlton, Best and Law so definitely had an eye for a player.

Finally, Jim McLean deserves a mention. Winning a league and talking a provincial club to a European final and the semis of the European Cup was impressive stuff.

{Ed001's Note - Shankly gave Law his debut as a 16 year old at Huddersfield Town and wanted to take him to Liverpool with him. It was he who recommended him to his friend Matt Busby, who paid a British record fee for him.}

Forgot about shanks and busby I would say WS would be 5th best just wasn’t thinking.

15 Jun 2020 22:48:45
Thought jock stein was a rangers man anyway so why would we not agree? Lol 😂 but yeah sir Walter for me, best by far, didn’t have all the riches like Alex Ferguson at Man Utd and didn’t live in an era like jock stein where u get through 5 games on aggregate wins u win the European cup, Walter was better than both, tactical genius who had to cut his cloth to suit in comparison to far superior wealth clubs in Europe, whilst dominating domestically, LEGEND.

Jock Stein, followed by Shanks and Ferguson.

15 Jun 2020 23:00:14
Sorry lads can't have stein.

16 Jun 2020 03:20:48
Walter gets in the top 5 behind Ferguson, Busby, Stein and Shankly. That's some company to be in.

16 Jun 2020 06:57:29
Gaz, Ferguson never had riches at Aberdeen and look what he did there. Alex Ferguson was probably the greatest manager of all time from any country!

{Ed001's Note - didn't he take over Aberdeen when they were flush with North Sea money? I am pretty sure they had a comparatively large amount of money to spend.}

16 Jun 2020 09:45:50
12 what are your reasons you can’t have stein.

16 Jun 2020 10:13:30
Hard to argue with Ferguson, Stein and Smith in that order, though Bill Shankly's brother Bob did a fantastic job steering Dundee to their only league title in 1962 on limited resources. As a youngster born and brought up in Dundee, before my Dad allowed me to travel to Rangers games, I remember this team:

Liney, Hamilton, Cox; Seith, Ure, Wishart; Smith, Penman, Cousin, Gilzean, Robertson.

Some team!

Well Alex Ferguson also got sacked by st mirren? But yeah he is a great manager I’m not saying he’s not, I just think Walter shades it for me 👍 if Alex deviated from a 4-4-2 he might’ve won a few more European cups in my opinion, Walter was great at selecting tactics n formations, just my opinion mate 👍.

16 Jun 2020 20:08:49
Gaz sorry Walter does not shade it from Fergie.

16 Jun 2020 20:09:52
Doiger, Gilzean a fantastic player, I wanted him at rangers.

17 Jun 2020 02:52:45
Ok Alex Ferguson won what? 13 titles and 5 fa cups in 26 years? Also 2 champions leagues, that’s 20 major trophies in 26 years, Walter smith won about 23 in 11 years, more trophies in less than half the timespan, Alex Ferguson took over Man Utd in 1986 he didn't win the league until 1993.

Walter was successful in both his periods at rangers right from the get go, Walter also took us on a 44 game unbeaten run, including a ten game unbeaten run in the champions league where only corruption prevented us getting in the final, took us to the UEFA cup final in 2008, became Scotland manager and took us more than 70 places up the rankings, it’s Walter Smith for me 👍.
