Was discussing today with pals i go to ibrox with, about just how good a centre half big richard 'the lionheart' gough was in his pomp! Out of the five of us 4 of us reckon big gough was the best centre half we ever witnessed, playing for the glasgow rangers.
The other one incidentally said big terry butcher was the best ever rangers centre half. Gough IMHO could have played for any club in europe in his peak years, with ease.
We were all just saying with over inflated transfer fees nowadays and going by them,
how much would big goughie be worth in today's market. I personally reckon anything between £60-£80million, which i gauged on how much liverpool paid southampton, for big virgil van dijk and as far as i'm concerned gough was easily as good as van dijk, if not better. I remember the great juventus manager marcello lippi interested in signing gough and at that particular time lippi said he hadn't seen a better centre half anywhere in europe at the time. Some compliment from an italian who perfect in the art of defending. The words of lippi were very true however, as big gough was an exceptional centre half! 👌Once gough hung up his boots and blood soaked bandaged headband, i honestly thought he was an absolute cert to be a future glasgow rangers manager. I think he would have made a very good manager. He's now rightfully however, the rangers worldwide ambassador. Very fitting for a legend of his stature, don't you think fellow bears? What's all your thoughts on this and big gough in general guys? 🤔.

Coops, wonderful player for Gers, think Gough was manager at Livingstone.

31 May 2020 16:55:29
Did Gough not manage a club coop?
Great player/ defender.

I was fortunate to know him quite well for a while as he lived next door to a relative in Bothwell. He was a gentleman off the field and a warrior on it. He was more mature and intelligent than your average footballer and loved being a Rangers player. We all got pissed after the 1996 cup final when we murdered Hearts (at this time I was doing some work for Rangers), a great memory. He tried management but wasn't a success, but is now a great ambassador for our club.

Hard as nails blue blood. In all respect Big Terry Butcher was a Hardy big article too. Wish they could clone either one of them today. No disrespect to present players.

31 May 2020 17:13:55
Yes bankie is correct he was manager of livingston for about a year or so. I think as he had his house in america, that was how he left his job at livingston, to go back there to his family.

31 May 2020 17:49:40
Loved him but no chance he was as good as van dijk is the now mate.

31 May 2020 17:57:53
Coops, as good a player as he was I don’t think Gough had the desire or fortitude required to be a successful football club manager. He is much more comfortable front of house and working the media. In some respects I’d say he’s similar to McCoist and has similar weaknesses.

Gough was a great ch for the gers also an excellent right back.
I had a pound on him 33/ 1 when he scored against England.
SGL u r right Gough value would be 60 plus.

31 May 2020 18:33:40
I don't think you can compare players now to back in the day as the game has changed so much. Players where players back in the day now they are athletes. My first rangers news poster was stuart Munro does anyone know if he was any good?

31 May 2020 18:41:58
Stuart munro was a good left back and unsung hero in amongst class acts! I'm sure we got stuart munro from alloa athletic!

31 May 2020 18:47:29
Covenanter, i agree with everything you say regarding big gough! It must have been a privilege being the big man's neighbour. I bet you enjoyed all big goughies stories and his undoubted love for the rangers! What's your take covenanter on who you personally thought was the better centre half between richard gough and virgil van dijk? All about opinions and mine differs to Herewego55.Big gough could have played for any club, that's how highly i rated him. Like you state covenanter, he was a total gentleman into the bargain and was a thoroughbred of a professional! 👌.

31 May 2020 18:49:57
Correct SGL, he was our Supporters Club POY during his time with Rangers, and was great company that night, a very steady left back.

31 May 2020 19:05:29
Gough all day long.

31 May 2020 19:18:28
Irvger big gough was a right centre half, who could play right back especially in his younger days.

31 May 2020 19:32:41
Ross McCrorie displays some of same attributes Gough displayed, can also play RB and CH in addition to DM. Young Ross should be back in the first team squad next season. A future Gers captain.

31 May 2020 19:34:37
Coops I think Irvger was talking about Stuart Munro mate.

31 May 2020 20:14:42
I beg your pardon irvger! Cheers jaws for pointing out my stupidity mate! 🤭👍.

31 May 2020 20:27:13
Lads, we all loved big Goughie but Van Dijk is top 3 centre half’s in the world at the moment.

31 May 2020 21:11:20
All about opinions C of Ibrox but i honestly thought richard gough was a better centre half than virgil van dijk mate. Richard gough in his pomp could have played for ANY club in europe. Perhaps the biggest compliment gough received was from the legendary italian juventus manager marcello lippi. That said it all for me!

31 May 2020 21:27:49
C of ibrox I’d say the standard of ch position was greater when gough was in his prime than now so he might not have made top 3 in world but in Europe I’d say aye.

John25, that same day that you bet big goughie for first goal against england at hampden, i missed the scotland v england game that day in 1985,as me and 5 of my mates were at the bon jovi concert, in the playhouse in Edinburgh. We all went to the scotland games in those days.

I remember it well because that saturday it was pissing of rain all over scotland. Bon jovi came onto the stage that night, drapped in the saltire praising scotland for Beating england 1-0,with our very own richard gough scoring the only goal with a header! Superb memories my friend! 👍👌.

Did Gough not get himself into a bit of bother, hence hurrying up his wedding ?

01 Jun 2020 03:41:19
SGL Van Dyke is a different, more modern player, and is a top centre half for today's game. Gough played in a different era and you can no more compare them than you could Gough to Woodburn. Great players should be judged only in their generation, mate.

01 Jun 2020 08:56:45
I know what you're saying covenanter. Big gough was actually a good passer of the ball also and could bring it out of defence to link the play. I just thought the guy was a total thoroughbred and even in his late 50's now, you can easily see he looked after himself!

01 May 2020 12:54:34
Richard gough all day long for me. He was quick brave definitely had will to win dominant in the air. What a leader of men!

01 Jun 2020 12:56:42
SGL you’re right we signed Munro from Alloa. I might be wrong but I think it was something daft like 30k we paid for him. Was very reliable from my early memories.

01 Jun 2020 12:59:28
Big gough for me to 100%.

01 Jun 2020 14:51:01
I think i would be correct in saying that big richard gough was rangers most successful captain of modern times! I reckon off the top of my head big gough must have lifted around 18/ 19 trophies as glasgow rangers captain? Of course i stand to be corrected! I think barry ferguson can't be too far behind big goughie in trophies lifted, as glasgow rangers captain?
