I noticed that a young central defender for our Under 19s – Oliver Hynd – popped in a couple of goals recently. I was reminded of another Hynd that played at the back for us – Big Roger. His full name was John Roger Shankly Hynd, and, as many of you will know, he was the nephew of the famous Bill Shankly. He was a big lump of a man. One of his Rangers career highlights was an appearance against Bayern Munich in Nuremberg in the 1967 Cup Winners Cup Final.

Bizarrely, he played up front that day due to our injury crisis. He went on to play in England before briefly managing Motherwell. He was always a squad player rather than a first choice, but we could maybe do with a few with a physique like his in our team today. Anyone have other memories of Roger Hynd?

Roger was one of the nicest guys you could meet.
Was a PT teacher at Berryhill Primary in Wishaw
Always spoke highly of his time at Rangers.
Genuinely nice guy. ?.

Actually the injury crisis was over but Scot Symon left him at centre forward against Munich and he actually scored a goal that would have put us one up but was adjudged to have fouled Sepp Maier with a robust challenge that probably would not have been a foul in Scotland.
This game was seen as the beginning of the end for Symons managerial career after Chairman John Lawrence bemoaned the fact that he had played three half backs in the forward line, A.

Smith, Hynd, D. Smith at 8,9,10. Not strictly true as Alex Smith had played centre forward a lot that season.

The original Bomber wasn't shy up front either

and big DJ was a menace wherever he played, fearless men both.

We were very unlucky that night in Nuremberg. If his goal had stood, Hynd would have been a hero.
