No doubt, this will seem a boring post, but I'm a philosopher (yes, really) and like therefore, to have thought experiments. A while ago, maybe 12-18 months, I asked for a poll here about AI. My logical argument would be something like this
1. Human error is leading to bad referee and VAR decisions
2. AI makes less mistakes than humans
Conclusion: therefore, AI should control VAR/ refereeing
The results of the poll were overwhelmingly that even though there are continual errors: biases/ deliberate cheating, that members of this site would still rather have a human referee than and AI one.
Which seems to me to be an unusual choice. Yes, a human/ humans still need to program the AI, but the SFA don't have the budget or ability to do that, so this technology would come from elsewhere and therefore eliminate local supporter bias.
So, a year or so on from my original post and in the aftermath of bad decisions, what is the temperature in the room now? AI as a future technology that can flag decisions/ take decisions and eliminate bias and human error or keep humans, keep being victim of the system and keep complaining?

Can you write an algorithm that incorporates subjectivity, is Machine learning capable of accelerated learning on a topic that has so many variables, the initial programming would be massive. Yes humans do initial setup/ input, if that's wrong, we'll does it learn correctly. The data would be enormous at setup for any hope for it to function correctly imho.

For folk to ask and have to have petitions for a replay is embarrassing. It was a stonewaller and yes we were cheated. Am sure aberdeen felt cheated last season when they should have had a stone wall penalty in the dying minutes. If we had taken our chance whej we had 4 on 1 to make it 2 nil then they games done.

Hawking warned that Ai could be in conflict with us as it progresses, wonder if he meant Var in conflict with Rangers???.

20 Dec 2024 11:34:22
How long does it take to become a philosopher and how do you become one?

20 Dec 2024 11:56:09
I think AI has its place, e. g. factual decisions like offside can be programmed as is happening down south from next season I think. as Fork says it is about the subjective decisions as well. How does AI say if contact is enough for someone to go down, would it not just end up that every piece of contact was a foul. so it may have a place but isn't in a position from my understanding to take on the full role. It would be Celtic fans who would be writing the programmes when the first decision is made we don't agree with. football fans and pundits will never change on that no matter who makes them or how the decisions are made.

Paul agree re Dons penalty decision from last year. My mate went on about cheating lodge referees for weeks.

How long to become a philosopher? Well i'd argue that anyone that thinks about questions is already doing philosophy. But just like turning your taps on and off doesn’t make you a plumber, i'd also argue that it involves years of study. It might not be that obvious as course of action and that’s why people often low key throw shade.

Can just see the program line, " Green and White hoops= nothing to see, reset all clear" ?? something like that Angus?.

20 Dec 2024 12:29:34
Am pretty stoned (legally! ) That must make me a philosopher. I am the philosopher stoned. Am away for a lie doon.

20 Dec 2024 12:40:08
Legally no like you??.

20 Dec 2024 12:41:47
Never work - as I know an AI bot who is a secret Jungle Jim . say no more- so there ???.

20 Dec 2024 12:51:00
It's a huge field of study with varying "sophys" off in tangent with philosophy, mainly it's about understanding varying aspects of any particular study field, and how it fits in in this thing we call life/ reality. Something like that anyway?.

I don't believe in AI, machines only do what they are programmed to do, no intelligence whatsoever. However, they can do what they do fast and repetitively.

20 Dec 2024 13:00:31
Bizz I think that AI can now learn form its mistakes which if the original programme was right would be a step forward. I believe the self learning not making the same mistakes twice element is going under the working title of the Alan Muir protocol.

20 Dec 2024 13:08:36
Whether you believe or not its here and progressing quickly, scolars saying awareness is fundamentally possible, smarter minds than us.

20 Dec 2024 13:33:08
As long as the AI machines are all brethren bot's of their local digital lodge then i wouldn't have a problem with them being used. Imagine if they used manky bogin tramp bots that were scared of a digital clean up, that would be bad.

The better arguments is that if 3 refs are making the same bad calls as one ref, why do we need the extra two. Get rid of VAR in Scotland, until the refereeing improves we are paying for a service we are not getting.
All clubs are suffering and Monday morning apologies don`t help.

20 Dec 2024 13:50:02
You want to soak me in holly water then clean my hard drive. fook dat.

20 Dec 2024 14:32:18
AI Jesus wept we would get AI is a tim and AI is a prod in ten west of Scotland that wouldn’t help either.

20 Dec 2024 14:33:35
Wsl if there was no var on Sunday you would be arguing we need var as the ref got the Decision wrong we would have still lost on Sunday ? var isn’t the problem.

20 Dec 2024 14:34:08
Three Cheers - all you need to be a philosopher is a handful of shrooms and away you go.

20 Dec 2024 17:06:19
correct in both your posts Storm. I think AI has its place to semi automate offside calls which has already been trialled in competition I think. Neil Lennon suggested Willie Collum bing in VAR location for cup finals and I think that would be a good idea. he seems to know what the process should be and would make sure they use it.

20 Dec 2024 18:01:26
im all for AI calling for offside, must be a damn sight quicker than what it takes with VAR, i hate this play it out first which is great if the offside is marginal but when its obvious blow the whistle there and then.
Why don't we just have Ai as players too then we can just decide who wins the leagues and cups and let AI play it out for us. save hundreds in transfers and don't need to worry about injuries.

My wife's a philosopher. Not many of them about nowadays. She worked as a school teacher in the end. I wouldn't expect many philosophers tune into Rangers Banter. I bet you're the only one.
