Right, I'm after a bit if help here as I'm struggling to work out how PC, who still had 3 years left on his contract, was handed an additional 12 month. Can anyone explain our board's thinking?
Let's look at some of his results. Played the tims 4 times, 3 times in the league, and once in SC final. From those games, he managed 1 point out of 9 and we lost the final!
Then we had the situation in the league, and for some reason, we managed to throw away the opportunity to extend our lead, and from there, well, we know the rest, don't we?
Since he came in, our European results were nothing special. Betis was decent, bit we made a mess of the next round and basically snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
Next we have his last 8 games (friendlies included), up to the Hearts game, where we have managed only 1 victory. Now, I know friendlies mean next the hee haw, but if we look at our last 10 league games, we have won only 4 of them, and that's it.
Now, after our board, who I believe are out of the depth running a football club, gave him this extension, I'm just scratching my head as to why. Am. i missing something?
Before anyone goes apoplectic, I'm not saying PC should get the sack, far from it. No, I just want opinions on why he was handed this extension, as so far, he's hardly lit the heather on fire. Would it not have made more sense for the board to hold off before seeing how this season pans out? Does this just prove how inept and naive this board are at running a massive football club? Could there be some sort of subtext to this extension?

Betis was decent, not sure you appreciate just how far behind we are from these leagues. It’s a message from the board, this guy is here for a long term project so don’t get your sack the manager banners out in Sept!

It’s not been good enough Sunshine, I’m guessing it’s to provide stability and security for players signing? A good player might not want to commit to a club that sacks there manager every 12 month. The 3 year on his previous contract is an interesting point, I didn’t know that.
I also think PC wanted to the security to commit to the rebuild, perhaps he was worried of getting the sack half way through?
Bottom line, this is going to be a brutal year, I just hope we’re in a better position the year after.

Imp the board have finally realised that changing managers every 9 months or so destabilises the club.
The costs involved in replacing not only the manager but the whole coaching staff followed by player turnover every time a new manager comes in is unsustainable.
It took Steven Gerrard 3 years to win the league, hard as it is we will probably have to give PC the same time.
So have the board done the right thing this time.
As I can't see into the future my guess is as good as anybody.
I do think we need to stop throwing money away by closing the revolving door at the managers entrance.
Only time will tell if the board have done the right thing.

From what I gather he didn’t sign a contract extension, he signed a new 4yr deal. That to me screams a pay rise.

That's the simplistc view. imo this was done as a politcal move, a show of confidence from the manager and the board. There were many in the msm and non msms reporting PC will be off due the circumstanes he faces. How could we convince players to come if they read that negative BS. So a good move all round, that gives confidence to all stake holders that were all in this together.

Do you know why we took one point off of Celtic, it’s quite simple they are a better team. We can’t keep playing players like Tav and beat Celtic.
I have said before this season is going to be a lot of pain.
The board obviously wanted to get him on a longer contract but we don’t know the ins and outs of said contract.
You and I both say our team isn’t good enough but you are having ago t the manager for not setting the heather on fire ? he has two hands tied behind his back from the board and players on ridiculous
Contracts which means we can’t get rid of them. Pep wouldn’t get a fine out of that team on Saturday.

Mate I don’t doubt a word your saying at all
But some saying it will take 3 windows to get his own team so in that context it’s going to be next summer before we see his own squad of players
Most of this group we all know like the back of our hand and haven’t been good enough I don’t see why that will change until they’re all gone?
The extension is because the board know it’s goi g to be at least a couple years before he stamps his whole authority on the team so have given him extension to show their support of him building a team for the future?
Or it’s because a team was going to poach him so we have given him an extension perhaps on better terms to make sure he stays?
All of above could be completely wrong and the board are just nuts ? or maybe I am ?.

He loves the club, contracts don't mean much these days anyway.

For me we need stability, PC inherited a complete mess with very little money to change it , this will take time you mention Celtic results they simply have a better team right now no matter who we had in charge we would struggle, the clear out has begun but until we get all these high earners out we can’t bring in new players and very few clubs will pay them what we are paying so they have every right to sit tight, but we can’t just add more players hoping we can get rid of others our wage bill is massive this will take two or three windows hence the length of contract.

It’s a sign from the board that they’re backing the manager and will give him a chance. I do think PC is a good manager but there are some questions starting to form about his tactics and player choices.

We all already knew that stig, your last statement is correct??.
04 Aug 2024 21:09:42
Thanks guys, some really good points made.
Storm, that's not the first time you've referenced Pep, and how he couldn't get a tune out of our players. Do you actually know how silly that is? Behave!
04 Aug 2024 21:20:31
Thanks fork got their in the end it seems ??.
04 Aug 2024 23:44:17
Anyone buying him out of contract would have to cough up some serious cash, not rocket science.
05 Aug 2024 05:10:23
He couldn’t that’s why I said it ? it’s the 2nd time I have made that reference thanks.
05 Aug 2024 07:00:18
The next winter window will have been three windows.
05 Aug 2024 08:08:10
Absolute rubbish, Storm! Can you remember Le Guen's team? Woeful! Then what happened? The gaffer came in and got a tune out of them. If you think a vastly superior manager like Pep couldn't set these players up better, and play a better, more successful system than PC, then you are very deluded.

I hope we've something in his contract that if we need to sack him it won't cost us a fortune.
