Guys I think a couple of signings in this window should be enough to secure 2nd place and European football and I feel we might need them as I cannot see us turning down any kind of money for Barry McKay if any club makes an approach.

05 Jan 2017 09:23:54
Gon4 55

Do you really think we would get by the qualifiers in Europe? Let's be honest the only way to make any money in the Europa league is to get into the group stages. Think we would need to play 4 qualifiers to get there and I very much doubt we would get anywhere close to the group stages.

05 Jan 2017 10:03:18
With the squad we have right now we would be lucky to get past the second qualifiers!

05 Jan 2017 10:28:28
With the right additions I don't think we would be far away from progressing to group stages. Yes it's a big ask but these kind of games are more open. Not the 'park the bus' style we need to play against the majority of times particularly at home. The fact is other European countries associations and in some cases teams we probably haven't even heard of seem to be nowadays at a higher standard than before. That's Scottish football for you. Anyone who says Scottish football as a whole has not suffered in the last 5 years are kidding themselves. European football at any level is a must and a start.

06 Jan 2017 08:54:03
We have to keep hold of barrie mckay meantime and get him on a longterm contract, as this will safeguard the club to get a much higher transfer fee, when he does eventually leave, which i truly hope, is not for a few years yet! We all know inevitably he will leave, to go and play in a much better league!

04 Jan 2017 21:18:32
John Toral being linked today. I think we should be able to finish 2nd with the squad we have without spunking money on average injury prone players in January. On players brought in thus far, the jury is out on mcparland and warburton. I mean what was the point in signing senderos? He was thrown into the Celtic game months back and hasn't had a look in since. Ok
He was rubbish that day but surely after a run of 5 or so games we can make a better judgement .

07 Jan 2017 11:21:40
Djab why are you claiming he's injury prone? You like to act like you know your stuff when actually you have no clue and come across to be very ignorant. A tiny bit of research would have revealed to you that Jon Toral has missed 2 matches in the last 2 years through injury. He's a young and talented lad who Rangers are lucky to get on loan. Added to that, him and Warburton worked together at Brentford. So please stop with this pathetic rambling thing you always seem to do. The only thing you come across as is some clueless fair-weather supporter in a lot of your posts.

04 Jan 2017 17:11:49
i see we are intrested in crawford from hamilton i would think they would at least won't a million for the lad he may be hamiltons best player but is he better than what we have currently or better than liam burt potenial wise maybe we should save the money and play burt instead.

04 Jan 2017 18:03:47
Can't say to much as I haven't seen much of him. But he didn't stand out against us and are midfield are not actually world beaters! Celtic about to pay 3 million for a player and we are looking at loan signings and average spl players.

04 Jan 2017 18:28:36
if the lad was really good a think clubs would have been in for him long time ago considering he is now 25 rite now a think we would be better off giving burt game time and see what he can do.

04 Jan 2017 18:32:12
I already posted on the rumours page that Ali Crawford will sign for rangers either in January or a pre contract and make his move in the summer

He has had interest from clubs down south but Rangers is his first choice due to the fact he wants to stay in Scotland fir the time being.

04 Jan 2017 18:54:36
If Burt was good enough he'd be playing. Simple as that.

04 Jan 2017 19:22:40
Dont think crawford is worth anywhere near a million quid craig don't rate him tbh and would be dissapointed in him signing if to be the case.

04 Jan 2017 19:24:06
Have to disagree with you there. Jordan Thompson is a better midfielder than andy halliday and he's not getting a chance so it's not as simple as that. Lee hodson is twice the defender tavernier is and he's 2nd choice. Burt deserves a chance this season. Just because some of the young players are not getting a chance doesn't mean there not good enough.

04 Jan 2017 21:46:56
Have to agree Hooly78. It is frustrating that Halliday and Tavernier appear to be undroppable, especially the former.

05 Jan 2017 00:19:26
it's more to do with our managers reluctance to drop players that are not performing so other are not getting a chance so how can they prove there good eneogh if we keep ignoring youths we will have none left.

05 Jan 2017 00:52:21
Ali Crawford is average at best, I've seen both him and Liam Burt and Burt is a better prospect. For that matter, so is Thompson. Signing the likes of Crawford would be lkie giving these boys the finger. It won't (shouldn't) happen.

04 Jan 2017 17:11:49
i see we are intrested in crawford from hamilton i would think they would at least won't a million for the lad he may be hamiltons best player but is he better than what we have currently or better than liam burt potenial wise maybe we should save the money and play burt instead.

05 Jan 2017 11:29:42
Crawford is a sound player, price is £300k now or free in the summer, don't know where the £1m is coming from.

04 Jan 2017 15:14:26
Seen an article from a Birmingham fans page saying that they should compete with us for Toral. Their fans still hold him in high regard although he's injury prone.

04 Jan 2017 12:27:15
Just putting it out there what about out of contract Adebayor.

04 Jan 2017 12:46:41
Guys a mercanary no chance he'd come to us for what we could afford.

04 Jan 2017 12:56:15
Not played for 6months surely a wage and game time better than nothing.

04 Jan 2017 15:09:11
Agbonlahor?

04 Jan 2017 15:18:09
another waster with a bad attitude.

04 Jan 2017 17:33:36
Get young Murphy from villa and then a striker like frazier Campbell? Or maybe even will grigg.

04 Jan 2017 12:02:36
If we are looking for another option at CB at the end of the season does anyone think Christophe Berra might be a good acquistion? Not sure about his wages but I believe he's under contract at Ipswich Town until June, so might even be a good pre-contract option.

04 Jan 2017 12:25:25
Good player but I think we need to sort out a winger and striker first.

04 Jan 2017 12:32:41
Completely agree, just a thought because we are no doubt going to lose Hill at the end of the season and Kiernan possibly before then if an offer comes in.

04 Jan 2017 13:27:51
Our weakest position is midfield where we are short of a holding midfield player and a defensive midfield player.
I am astonished that people still see the need for a centre back when, if we replaced Halliday we would strengthen both our midfield and our attacking options.

04 Jan 2017 13:54:16
Look at our goal difference and the main reason why we don't turn draws in to wins is because we do not covert chances

We need a proper goal scorer (20 plus per season if not two)

After that we need two quality centre halfs then a Defensive midfielder.

04 Jan 2017 15:06:51
If we get an out-and-out striker I doubt if MW would play him, he would not suit our style of play. How often this season was a good delivery into the opponents penalty-area wasted because no one is there. Mark Hateley and Derek Johnstone were excellent in the air but how many goals would they score a season from headers if they played in this system?

04 Jan 2017 17:24:10
Trueblue94, although its not top priority berra would be perfect candidate for CB played our league so no probs adapting and he is quality player I've said before on here berra is who I would b after for cb in summer.

04 Jan 2017 21:23:17
Of course i'm the first to admit that we need to sign possibly 2 midfielders and a striker this month, but there's one priority i think we should do this month, before anything else. Get barrie mckay tied down to a longterm deal with obviously better terms and a transfer fee clause inserted into the deal! This safeguards us against paltry bids for him which will inevitably happen, as he's only got 18 months left to run on his current contract! Eventually he'll sign for a big enough english club anyway but at least if we get him tied down, he'll leave on OUR terms and not for buttons!

04 Jan 2017 11:41:16
If Toral rumour is true, he could be useful. I just don't trust Warbs with more money.

If we don't get Europe and a small/ decent run at it. We are in trouble.

04 Jan 2017 11:58:18
Realy,? What money? Has brought in about 17 players in a year and a half for about 3 million. Maybe if he had decent funds he could sign better quality.

04 Jan 2017 12:08:46
A mini blog on what it's going to take for Dave King's plan of Europa League funds to bring solvency

Rangers have a number of obstacles to overcome before getting access to Europa League Group Stage monies.

A) They have to finish 2nd or 3rd in the SPL………. That looks probable at this time

B) They could qualify by winning the Scottish Cup……. That is much more of a long shot

C) Should they qualify either through A) or B) then they have to gain a UEFA licence

D) Rangers do not have automatic entitlement to a UEFA Licence . The SFA would have apply for Rangers under the exemption basis.

The discussion over whether Rangers would be appropriate for an exemption could and would last for ever. The SFA though have to decide whether Rangers merit achievement is considered worthy given the huge losses incurred and the view that exemptions are meant for clubs outside of a National Top Tier. I don’t propose here to debate the merits of Rangers being awarded a UEFA Licence, just to point out it’s not automatic and it’s highly sensitive. Not to mention that if the Supreme Court rule against Rangers or refuse to hear the appeal, the pressure on the SFA increases enormously.

Assuming though that all of the above is negotiated and Rangers enter the Europa League Qualifying in 2017-18, then here’s what they can expect to have to overcome before they get any access to Group Stage funds.

1 ) Rangers would enter in the 1st Qualifying Round if awarded a Uefa Licence. The coefficient awarded would be exactly the same for any Scottish Club who haven’t earned points in their own right in the last 5 years. This would result in Rangers being unseeded from the outset.

Using the current season as an example, these are the opponents Rangers could face in Q1

Stabæk IF, Linfield Belfast, FK Ventspils, FC Midtjylland, Víkingur, Brøndby IF, Dinamo Minsk, Kalju Nomme, Shamrock Rovers

Some tricky ties there and Rangers would not be favorites against all of those clubs

2) Assuming the draw was favorable and / or form was good, this is what would await in Q2 ( based on 2016-17)

(FK Aktobe), (Brøndby IF), (Shakhtior Saligorsk), (HJK Helsinki), Austria Wien, PAS Giannina, (Slovan Bratislava), (IFK Göteborg), (Omonia Nicosia), NK Maribor, (Admira Wacker), (FK Ventspils), (DVSC Debrecen), (Maccabi Tel-Aviv), Hajduk Split, BK Häcken

Again a lot of difficult ties there, and it’s debatable whether Rangers would be favorite against more than 2 or 3 of those clubs

3) Assuming the draw was again favorable and / or form was good, this is what would await in Q3 ( based on 2016-17)

AZ Alkmaar, FK Krasnodar, (Partizan Belgrade), Sassuolo, Rio Ave, (Omonia Nicosia) , AA Gent, Slovan Liberec, West Ham United, (FC Midtjylland), (HJK Helsinki), Apollon Limassol

We are now deep into underdog territory, however if Rangers prevailed, this is who they would face in Q4 (final qualifying round )

Shakhtar Donetsk Ukr
Olympiakos Gre
Anderlecht Bel
AZ Alkmaar Ned
Fenerbahçe Tur
Sparta Praha Cze
PAOK Thessaloniki Gre
Racing Genk Bel
BATE Borisov Bls
AS Saint-Étienne Fra
AA Gent Bel
FK Krasnodar Rus
Rapid Wien Aut
Slovan Liberec Cze
NK Maribor Slo
Maccabi Tel-Aviv Isr
Austria Wien Aut
West Ham United Eng
Panathinaikos Gre
FC Midtjylland Den
Sassuolo Ita
Qarabag Azb

Getting Europa League Group Stage monies is going to be incredibly challenging for Rangers. To add a little context, for Celtic to get that amount all it will take is for Southampton to sell Van Djik.

04 Jan 2017 12:24:12
Saw the username above, that was enough.

04 Jan 2017 12:29:40
Totally achievable let's just get second place and go on s good Scottish Cup run.

04 Jan 2017 12:51:54
That was some thorough reporting from another obsessed one.

04 Jan 2017 13:13:27
I have no idea if the OP is a Celtic or Rangers fan but out of interest Ger88, what part or parts of the post do you disagree with and why?

04 Jan 2017 13:18:24
MW bangs on about partland, has he managed to get us any decent players who's made the grade this year?
I don't think so.
Maybe big fod, but that's about it.

Tav - shocking
Kiernan - shocking
Wilson- complete joke
Windass- brutal.
Crooks-. Getting wages for nothing
Senderos- also wages for nothing.
Halliday- posted missing every game he plays. Nowhere near rangers standard. He should have been sacked instead of Barton.
Forrester, big time Charlie who plays as an individual instead for the team

Rather give youth a chance now instead of any of them playing again,
Young Burt could easily run our midfield.

Warbs need a complete change of tactics. Play 2 through the middle and we would start scoring goals.
Waggy isn't a winger.
Get him and miller or dodoo up top. The goals will start to flow.

A solid 4-4-2 is what we need.

Let's face it we where crap for the full of 2016. The last few months of the championship we where terrible tae.

How warbs and Davie Weir are still in a job is beyond me.

Most of all us bears need to stick together. Not starting any nonsense concerning Dave king and the board.

Is a hard thing piling money into something that you know you'll never get back.
Once we get our retail sorted we will be on a more stable footing.
Probably with more investors.
Hard to get investors just now with the nonsense that's going on with Ashley. He single handedly is the root of our present problem.

04 Jan 2017 13:28:27
yes cullin72.im an eastender, i usually post on the celtic forum on this site but I read the rangers rumours and banter, a lot of good bloggers on it. saw the original post and thought bears would find my post interesting. no malice at all.

04 Jan 2017 15:26:28
An interesting post with a lot of information that emphasises how difficult it will be for Scottish Teams to progress in Europe in the future. At least with your team dEBT, your current manager appears to be intent on building a decent squad with some potentially good young players.

04 Jan 2017 15:29:37
i am surprised anyone had any doubts you are tic supporter.

04 Jan 2017 17:00:24
Totally agree tom, it really is stacked against Scottish clubs and other leagues outside the big 4 to progress into euro group comps now, that's why it's a great feat for Celtic just to get there, even if we do get into Europe next season it is more likely we wouldn't make the group stage, only my opinion, because we won't invest on players because we can't afford to, unfortunately Celtic will strengthen big time this Jan, so it could be a battle with the sheep for 2nd right until the end of the season, it's going to be a long roan, but I don't think most fans will accept this and will want warbs and weir sacked.

04 Jan 2017 18:22:29
R. E Naz username says it all really mate :) .
Was an interesting read though will give the guy credit who knows how much that could change for next season but that speaks volumes of what I have been trying to say. Loan singings are fair enough for cover but in terms of building we should be looking at getting a better standard of player tied down in January because by the looks of it Europe League qualification isn't going to be a walk in the park.

05 Jan 2017 10:09:37
Dolby, I am more of the view that it is King we need to replace than Warburton although if we had a serious owner alongside the three bears then no doubt they would have their own view on who should manage the team.

04 Jan 2017 09:15:18
Haris Vukcic anyone?

04 Jan 2017 10:18:00
No! He was rubbish and too slow the first time and he's a ball greedy ba***rd as well.

04 Jan 2017 11:08:09
Absolute GASH.

04 Jan 2017 11:14:31
No thanks we can do without him.

04 Jan 2017 13:14:57
Decent enough in the Championship until he seemed to lose interest.

Would he help close the gap on Celtic? No, we need much better than him to help do so.

04 Jan 2017 15:29:51
I have no idea whether Vukcic could do a job for us and I agree that he would not help us close the gap on Celtic but right now I don't see us signing anyone of the quality needed to close the gap. We are expecting McParland to land us some decent inexpensive signings that will make a difference but I am not holding my breath!

With the exception of McKay, our goalkeeper and perhaps Rossiter and Crooks if they can get fit I see no one currently in the first team squad under 30 that is anything more than mediocre!

04 Jan 2017 15:55:29
Vukic? Not rubbish, but not what we need.

04 Jan 2017 17:02:01
We won't close the gap on Celtic anytime soon, it's a long road ahead, Celtic will only get stronger under Brendan Rodgers, fact.

04 Jan 2017 17:33:20
aye till the premiership comes calling, which i don't think will be as long as people think.

04 Jan 2017 20:29:26
Bgate w, nearly 2 million on garner, flop so far, 1/ 2 million on o halloran who he doesn't play, big wages on senderos who he doesn't play cost us a fortune by not handling Barton saga properly, he's had money most of which has been wasted the goalkeeper has probably been our best signing imo.
