When the dust settles and we pick the bones of our back to back games against benfica, yes we've thrown away a 2 goal lead twice, home and away to benfica, but we're still in a very good place for qualification, to the europa league round of 32👍Yes we could/ should have sewn up our qualification by now, with the position we got ourselves in both home and away to benfica, but they're a quality team, no doubt about that and we were a match for them and more at times, in both games. We've all got to be happy with where our club is at present 👌A wee mention on kemar roofe, who's now close to full fitness and is showing his class, with another terrific goal tonight! His goals per game ratio for us already is pretty impressive and he is a quality player 👌Roofe undoubtedly will be a very big player for us going forward!

SGL, you've mentioned they are a quality team but we are a better team. Let's be honest, we've blown it twice against them. Tavs performance was the worst I've seen all season as he's been fantastic. don't care if you say I'm being negative but we should of won both these games. On a positive note, I did cash out at 2 nil, so got £23 for my tenner.

We're all gutted to drop a 2 goal lead again but I think we'd all have swapped any point of the last 8 years to draw twice with Benfica. The players will learn and will earn 55 if they keep believing.

Thought also that glen kamara was my motm tonight and was immense in midfield again for us 👌He's so slick and smooth in his midfield play and has terrific technique 👌

so he does! As i've said many times on here its the best 50k we'll ever spend 👍 He's a class act and i've no doubt we'll struggle to keep hold of kamara, beyond this coming summer.

Hard to fault but I think mcgregor and goldson need to have a look at these goal kicks. We were cruising then this passing a goal kick to goldson on the goal line started again. Benfica started picking us off as we struggled to get out, it just put us under pressure and gave them belief and the momentum. Last 10 we end up hanging on but I thot it was self inflicted tonight. We invited them on and when u do that good teams can pick the lock around the box. Still a point isn't the worst result and should see us through.

Don't like this playing out from the back against such good players. Heart in the mouth time. However, it's a brolliant effort to get to where we are in Europe. I just need to hark back to Pedro and Progres and I always feel a whole lot better.

Bit sickened after that . Benfica made 5 subs why did SG not even make 1 . Even my daughter could see a few of the players needed replaced . Anyway not the worst result . It will be a long flight back from prague for them.

We were playing really good and all contributing, except maybe Kent looked knackered. SG was happy with our team performance so didn't make subs. Some really sterling performances by us and unlucky to draw, Balogun, Morelos, Roofe, Kamara, Davis, Arfield.

Bizzy only change I would have made would have been Barker for Kent. May have got us out.
Tav probably made his first defensive mistake, very poor challenge for the header. But now onto liege which we will win.
Also want benfica to win both their games then we are through regardless.

Benfica were class when they turned up though. I'd have taken 2 points out of the 2 games against them at the start of it. Nevertheless we will learn from this, at this level you get punished. But to a man I thought they all put in a great shift. Disappointed with two draws against an Elite side, sign of the times fellow bears. onwards.

A good display from us against a quality side, but, we must learn to play substitutes, when we went 2-0, it was clear to me that Alfie and Kent were spent forces and Barker and Itten should have come on at that time to test that Benfica back line with especially with Barkers pace. We will go through, I'm sure of it.

Brilliant. Love reading Celtic rumours at the moment. It's a comic. They hate Liewell and popcorn teeth more than us. Unfortunate score for us again, but we're still top. Not bottom. Like some Scottish teams. Top of the scottish league. Top of Europa League. We're going up and they're going down. We've won nothing yet but 55 is on the way. I also think we'll get to the last 16 or even 8. We're doing tremendously well. Also why does Scotland not thank us for single handedly boosting the coefficient rating? If we had to rely on Celtic and Aberdeen, we'd be almost in the forties. Not almost top ten country in the world. Maybe Scotland should send the rangers team to play for them. The hatred for all things Rangers has blinded them. They are unable to see the bigger picture of what's in front of them which will ultimately lead to their downfall!

I watched a cracking documentary last night about Maradona. It was on for 2 1/ 2 hours on more4. Well worth watching what a player and what a life. I was laughing at the songs the Juve fans sang about the Napoli fans and they didn't hold back with their lyrics making most teams songs sound like lullabies in comparison. As I say well worth a watch get it on catch up and it was simply called Diego Maradona 🖐️⚽.

3 cheers, does the documentary cover in some detail the group of guys that led him astray in Napoli. Remember seeing a documentary about Maradona on a long haul flight a few years ago and it was actually very sad. Brilliant football talent but unable to manage his life. Throughout the history of sport it seems this is a familiar story, particularly in football and boxing I think.

Sir Walter also announced he was leaving half way through the season.
Gazza being sold.
Laudrup signing a pre contract with Chelsea.

Gazza leaving was a massive factor on us not securing 10iar, but so was Negri's refusal to play - losing our biggest talent and top goalscorer was always going to cost us!
The 0-1 home defeat to Killie cost us the league, and out of Gazza and Negri, It would be interesting to hear who you think would have made the biggest difference in that game? If we had won that game, we'd have won the league. This is only my opinion.

Coops. Gazza was increasingly erratic that season as his off field behaviour and personal choices began to catch up with him. Recall he was also dumped by England that season. Don’t believe his exit was a major factor and I’ve heard Sir Walter comment likewise.

I think the biggest factor was Sir Walter announcing early that he was leaving. The squad basically knew that big changes were coming the next season and that they had no future at the club. Sure, Gazza not playing at his best and Laudrup signing the pre-contract had an impact as well, but the uncertainty caused when Walter's announcement was made was the biggest factor.

All in all, the blame for it lies at the door of David Murray in my view, it was all done in public to let him look like the big man, attracting a major name.

There were just so many factors that went against us that year and they all contributed unfortunately. Smith announcing he was going to leave, Gazza’s form dropping dramatically (hence why he was sold), Laudrup announcing he was going at the end of the season plus he was suffering from an ankle issue by then that curtailed the number and effectiveness of his performances. The squad was ageing having been kept together for most of 9 in a row, folk like Gough, Goram and McCoist were pretty much done and Alan McLaren’s knees were gone by then. We’d brought in a large number of players to start rebuilding and some of them flopped (Stale Stenssas) . And then a large number of the players we had brought in to rebuild the team ended up out with long term injuries, Negri, Rozenthal, Jonas Thern, Lorenzo Amoruso. Imagine even if we’d had those four available all season, even with everything else that happened we’d probably of won the league. There were just too many negative factors contributing and too much bad luck.

Gers1978, I think you’ve hit on most of the reasons. In addition to those you comment on I think 2 other factors are probably relevant. Firstly physiologically the team was largely a spent force having achieved the goal of 9iar. Secondly, Celtic probably deserve some credit for their commitment to prevent us achieving 10iar.

I was lucky to get a chat with Gazza in the venue where I was a manager after one of his talk events. We chatted quite a lot and he said his last season at Rangers was a blur as he was on painkillers for his teeth the whole season. I think there was a bit of vanity where he should have got them seen to, but it sounded like he was also led astray by so-called friends.
He'd been in the Garage nightclub with Chris Evans and Jimmy Five Bellies the night before a game and got dropped the week after for playing rotten, but he said he couldn't drink that night as he was in too much pain. I didn't want to mention that I may have dropped him in it by letting it slip that he'd been out to Walter Smith's brother-in-law who I was at college with.
