I'm reading a lot here about needing a good defensive midfield player. I'm told that's actually Dominic Ball's natural position, so I would try playing him there as a sweeper in front of the two CDs and to cover for whatever wing-back is pushing forward. This would leave a choice of Holt, Halliday and Zelalem for the other two central places and offer us just a wee bit more security. Since Oduwa can also play in the centre, it would have the added bonus of not seeing much of Law again. Better to try and test things now while we can. The league's almost certainly going to be won anyway.

We're playing a high line and it's modern football we're playing. It's obsolete and a myth to believe in the defensive holding midfielder these days. Arsenal have done pretty well without one the last 10 years.

People say Kiernan and Wilson aren't fast enough but they're a damn sight quicker than the likes of a McKinnon and Greig, Jackson and Forsyth. Halliday and Zelalem are must starters for us and we need their creativity. A Scott Brown ? No thanks. Lots posting we need Eustace and yet none have ever seen him play. I don't get that one. It's clear we need to score the first goal to limit this counter attacking philosophy of our opposition and McKay should start and Miller, if he does, sticks to the centre. I don't mind conceding 2 goals with this attacking style if we score 6.

Kfraser. Defensive mid is a more relevant role now more than ever due to attacking style of modern full backs.
Siting arsenal as a model for success over 10 years is defeating your own argument.
Compare them to Chelsea (essien, matic) or man u (carrick, keane) every great team has a midfield dynamo. Real, barca. Great attacking quality supported by a rock.

25 Sep 2015 19:46:35
I agree with kfraser. In this League it will be an empty jersey. If he does put someone in that role it should be on a horses for courses basis.
Maybe certain away games.

26 Sep 2015 07:28:29
Kfraser what utter nonsense in one swoop you have proved your football knowledge is mince, I'm assuming you have heard of Patrick viera in your wee bubble? Arsenals biggest problem is they have replaced a world class defensive midfielder with inferior ones like diaby, song, flamini and even now coquelin, all decent players but not as good as viera . One of the Arsenal fans biggest gripes is that arsen won't go out and spend big money on a decent one as well as a striker, hence the fact they are constantly linked with the likes of Sami kidera . The def mid position is one of the most important positions in the modern game and all successful teams have good ones.

{Ed001's Note - Vieira was a box to box midfielder, Petit was the defensive midfielder in that Arsenal midfield. Gilberto Silva replaced him and was the one that Wenger never replaced.}

26 Sep 2015 18:24:33
What you mean like Keane was a box to box midfielder and not a sitting midfielder? The reason I left petit out was the op said in the last 10 years and I thought he was gone longer than that .

{Ed001's Note - aye, Keane was too, good point, I never saw that reply. Silva was the defensive midfielder Arsenal missed though. Once he went they stopped winning.}

Disappointed like every other Bear after the other night. Don't like to upset the applecart but I thought the first chink in MW's armour was exposed when he appointed Wallace as captain. While he can play well and scores occasionally he is also very lackadaisical at times and in my opinion is certainly not captain material. How often has he been found out in defence. He's more often on his butt than anything else. Also why was Waghorn playing on the wing in the first half against St Johnstone with Millar playing through the middle. Miller has been excellent this season, but at the back post, not through the middle. McKay should have been on from the start imo.

look its only 1 bad game if u had been offered the way results have went u would have bit there hand off gie them a chance

24 Sep 2015 15:27:55
i keep seing messages saying we need a striker ? what chance has Hardie been given, and being realistic how much of a run has Clark had ? the odd game now and again is hardly a decent run.
Miller has burned out and is only worth a seat on the bench, at best.
Would also like to see Gasparotto recalled in January and be given a chance in the defence, perhaps on the bench to start with, Kiernan and Wilson aren't cutting it for me and need to be looking over their shoulders at competition for their places

24 Sep 2015 15:44:58
Wee bill we can't really find much fault in our management team, but I honestly think me gave john eu stance to much time to recover, if he had brought in a man to sit in front of the back four I think he would have went a long way to amending our problem, then was je was fit stuck him in font of back 4 as that was the original plan, so if je is not 100 percent com Xmas this is a space most define toy needing filled, other managers worth there salt can see it, why can't me or big Dave.

Weebill

That is actually a very good shout on Gasparotto he is highly rated and Warburton seems to know how to improve young players. That said he thinks loan will be better for him.

Personally I feel now we know exactly why he wanted Eustace as a sweeper to protect the defence hope he is in team soon

would beinterested in knowing what you think of us maybe trying for Murray Davidson in January? maybe instead of Eustace?? he's 9 years younger and looking in good shape

24 Sep 2015 16:58:00
Surely we can do better than Murray Davidson.

24 Sep 2015 17:07:17
Cuillin72 yes we probably could do better, but we are where we are due to having spent unwisely in the past. There are better players out there, but i think he could do it for us. 3 years ago he was deemed good enough to be called up for his country, so he is not a bad player

24 Sep 2015 18:14:06
Davidson has terrible injury history, if all goes as normal he will miss half the season.
Then again that hasn't stopped us in the past LOL

24 Sep 2015 22:55:56
I thought he played well and would be a good addition to the team however he does have injury problems but may be worth a chance

24 Sep 2015 08:51:41
Perhaps Barcelona's 4-1 defeat to Celta puts our own defeat to St. Johnston into perspective a little :)

24 Sep 2015 09:34:57
Lol do us a fav puts what into perspective m8 the fact u got done by the big bhoys or the fact u lot seem to think your playing like barca anyway was good to see how far uv came am I not right in saying the gardener beat them last year?!!!

24 Sep 2015 09:46:52
Is there a smell in here?

24 Sep 2015 09:58:50
puts it into perspective that any team can beat any other team. Celta vigo a fairly average team beating in my opinion the best team currently. rangers were done by the better team on the night, like barca

24 Sep 2015 13:55:01
Aye shandyboy. Did they not beat your lot as well last season? And wasn't it at Porkheid?

24 Sep 2015 08:30:57
Was it just me or did anyone else think Warbs couldn't change the shape when required the other night. Teams will test weak areas now that they have seen how. We will see I suppose.

24 Sep 2015 10:24:27
disagree there jack. nothing wrong with the formation, we play a 4-3-3 and got done by in my opinion 3 very bad defensive decisions. fair play to St johnstone all chances were taken well however all should have been dealt with.

24 Sep 2015 10:42:04
Warbs won't change the shape, ever. He said when he first came in the team will play his way and he won't change the shape or style no matter who we are playing.

24 Sep 2015 12:37:50
Cee, I'm not sure that's a great plan mate. Sometimes you have to stop your full back bombing up the park and leaving holes at the back. Not always but surely if it is required dependant on the team you are playing.

24 Sep 2015 12:25:35
did anyone notice a few gers players slipping on the surface e.g. halliday and oduwa? maybe need to look at the studs on their boots!

24 Sep 2015 15:47:49
Bigdimps, or stop watering the grass so much.

24 Sep 2015 18:42:09
Cee love the fast flowin football and the formation we are playing at the moment but surely 3-0 down it would be good to have a plan B or change the formation to a 4-4-2 or a 3-5-2 to mix it up a bit. Like what am seeing football wise and lookin forward to going to the matchs again warbs will get more disisions Wright than wrong and will learn a lot from Tuesday nite
