WHO is Chris Powell? Ignore the irrelevant and the noise! As Gers fans sometimes we bog ourselves down with what others think, let’s look at the positives and concentrate on the team that Gerrard is building, for the 1st time in a long time there’s a PROPER buzz about the place, from the players with the camaraderie, the new guys coming in who explain very quickly that it was a mix of playing for Rangers and the SG effect, to the fans, who, for the first time in reality for a while actually feel like this is the year for 55, the last few years were full of misery, we had the monkey on our back when we returned to the top flight in being unable to beat that mob, a team low in confidence and self belief, now that they have showed that they are more than capable of pummelling them, it has given the whole club a lift, the likes of which I haven’t felt since pre 2012, I have been fortunate enough to live through some great Gers teams of old, saw some great CL nights under the lights of Ibrox, some world class footballers into the bargain and a dominance over our bitter rivals that some of the young team have never experienced, in football it’s swings and roundabouts, especially Scottish football, the tide is turning and the younger supporters will soon know what it’s truly like to be a Ger! #lets go.

TheFuturesBright, I agree 100% with what you say. I too, am old enough to have seen some great European nights at Ibrox, Gordon Smiths winner against Juventus, the 1-1 draw with AC Milan, when we Doddy's shot back off the post would have won the tie for us, the 4-1 pummelling of PSV Eindhovem, when Van Nistelroy was their centre forward, great times, and they are coming back soon, I can feel it.
As regards the back biting, a lot of it is uncalled for, but, it's all about opinions, as Huistra has said let's just enjoy everybody's patter.

Hi guys just a question here. why does everyone think katic will get dropped if we get helander? Why not play 3 at the back or even goldson being dropped?

Maybe goldson could be dropped but surely won't go 3 at the back and change whole formation of the team since we started? If he didn't change in to accomodate defoe/ morelos he's not going to do it for centre half.

If Katic was dropped constantly for Wirral then he sure will be dropped if we get this Helander guy. We’re not paying that sort of money for him to sit on the bench. Goldson won’t be dropped bc he’s one of Stevie G favourites. 3 at the back could be an option but I think we’ll go with the formation we finished last season with. It’ll be a shame if Katic gets dropped bc he’s a cracking CB who will only get better and could be sold for a lot.

We paid 2mil each for barasic and grezda and they both sat on the bench for most of the season. A large fee doesn't guarentee quality.

Gerrard stated he wanted to focus on all competitions. seems to me he wants rotation of players and good quality aswell. I think if we failed to qualify for Europe we would offload more.

A higher transfer fee doesn't guarantee quality or anything coldo.
It takes a lot of permutations coming together, to make any transfer work. But the difference i see with helander is that he has a decent pedigree playing for his country and playing 4 years in Italian football.

Now i know both barisic and grezda play for their countries, but i still think that the type of centre half helander is, he'll definitely play as one of our centre halfs and Scandinavians in general settle well in British football. I think scottish football will suit this big guy because as well as being a decent centre half, he also has work rate and heart, which is absolutely needed in the scottish premiership.

Now I don't have the footballing knowledge of coop, but I am a bit worried about the amount of games helander has played the last few years. he hasn't played that much. Should we be concerned? maybe not but perhaps we should actually wait and see him sign/ play before waxing on about how great he is? Just MHO.

Thats what I said coop, a large fee doesn't guarentee quality, hence why I gave the example of barasic and grezda. I'll throw in pena and herrera just to reinforce my point.

At least if we do sign filip helander, we will have 4 permanent, signed up centre halfs vying for the 2 centre half positions. I really like big nikola katic and think it will be a bit tough on him, if indeed he has to drop out for helander. on the other hand we all must trust steven gerrard on this, because if he's outlaying that sort of money for helander, then helander will play in a centre half pairing with connor goldson, I've got no doubt about that!

Also worth noting that helander is a left footed centre half. So it would be goldson right centre half, helander left centre half and both katic and edmundson, pushing them for first team starts. Its a very healthy situation we would find ourselves in, where our centre halfs are concerned. Gerrard has rightly so identified that area which undoubtedly needed strengthening, with joe worrall away back to forest and gareth mcauley released.

ED, could you please run a poll for me mate,
regarding what all bears out there, think our first choice centre half pairing should be, if we do indeed sign filip helander?

The poll should read, ie. who do you reckon our centre half pairing should be-goldson/ helander, goldson/ katic, goldson/ edmundson, helander/ katic, helander/ edmundson, katic/ edmundson?

I understand it's a big fee and he's obviously got plenty of experience, however, what he doesn't have is the understanding with his team mates. I'd stick with Goldson Katic until Helander is fully upto speed with the way SG sets his side up and builds up a partnership with the rest of the squad.

As per usual SuperCooper I disagree with you, Katic was by far the stronger centre half towards the end of last season. Form will dictate who plays (great position to be in) but Goldson will need to work hard to keep his place, he’s no longer SG number one centre half.

I know you have a hard-on for goldson (reminds you of rio Ferdinand) coop but like others on here I think Katic is a better defender. The season is a long one, 50-60 games, suspensions, injuries. I think having 4 centre halves is a good thing. Everyone will have a part to play. its not rocket science is it?

Steven gerrard prefers connor goldson. What bit of that do you not understand guys? I stand to be corrected but i'm as confident as i can be that steven gerrard STILL rates goldson his no.1 centre half and will eventually pair goldson and helander together. Its so very easy to see guys.

Coop you've had "no doubt" and "honestly believed" a lot of things over the years that have ended up causing you a lot of embarrassment. let's just wait and see, no one has heard of the swede never mind seen him play. I would drop goldson before katic and just because stevie G prefers goldson doesn't mean goldson is better, stevie G was so wrong to continually play worrall. let's wait and see before making wild predications.

Gerrard has openly said players will be picked on form so if we have 4x good CBs then no1 knows who’s will start! Personally I prefer Katic to Goldson and who knows about the new boy he could be anything but if we’re spending 3.5m on A player you’d hope he’s an upgrade! Let’s go 🙌🏻.

Gerrard thought worrall was better than katic and never dropped worrall until it was too late, honestly coop! let's wait and see who the in form pair are and we will take it from there. We all shouted until we were blue in the face that worrall should be dropped and stevie G never listened because he thought he was right, and he wasn't.

A lot of folk saying Katic will move on or Edmundson won’t be happy because we’re spending 4m on a defender.
Don’t forget Edmundson is only 21 and Katic 22! We do need another CB with experience to partner Goldson.
As good as Katic is he still has lots to learn and if we are going to have another 50-60 game season we need strength in depth!

I thought we had enough cover in Katic and Edmundson. Bit surprised by this largest signing fee in years. I think we're going to lose Morelos. Need a number 9, not Kent out wide. We've got tons of talent for that.

whether anyone agrees with it or not is connor goldson. I would bet my lot that his first choice centre half pairing, once helander settles in, will be goldson and helander! As much as i also like katic, i've got no doubt about this.

Apparently we have agreed a deal that sees Kent return on loan not sure if it’s true but if it does turn out to be true it’s got to be the end for Morelos. Sharing links with him to palace, spending 4M on a defender (risky imo) and Kent agreed back on loan.
