Ok I might get slated here but it’s a good discussion point. When we talk about being able to attract a certain quality of player after our European exploits, are we not in danger of getting a wee bit carried away here. Rangers are not regularly going to get to European finals, or even semi finals. 9 times out of ten we’d have been knocked out by dortmund or RB. English teams do t regularly make the Europa league final and they have a huge amount of spending power. I don’t think we have the wage structure to attract the players we’d all love to see at Rangers. The bottom line is that whilst we’ll continue to strive and repeat this seasons success in europe, it’s not going to be a regular occurrence. As long as Rangers are in the Scottish league getting paid peanuts for winning a 2 horse race and plying our trade against the st johnstones and Ross county’s of the world, we aren’t going to get regular success in Europe or be able to attract the calibre of player required to compete regularly in Europe. Getting into the knockouts of the europa league may well be our level.

Not sure if it was something I posted here or disused with my friends network but that’s the tough job Ross Wilson has we are a easy sell as a club 50k week in week out challenging for titles and cups year in year out but the tough job is selling a quality players the spfl.

Good and fair point AG.
We must however strive to get regular involvement in whatever Champions League setup is finally knocked up, to keep some sort 0f level of financial stability.

I'm not sure how many times you've said we can't expect finals and semi finals in one post Alloa but I think I get your point in principle. My question to you is why shouldn't we expect to make finals or semi finals? We're a very good team and not a team a lot of clubs will want to play. We need to stick within our business model and sign players we can afford however, that being said, we generated £17m from transfers last season (from January) and made £25m from our run in Europe. I fully expect part of that money to be invested in transfer signings who will improve our starting 11. Bosmans and cross border transfers have a great part to play in this as do our youth players however, these have to be balanced with a number of value signings otherwise your right, we may never see a European final again.

I get your sentiments, AlloaGer.
But as a team we need to strive to progress every season.
For me, that means trying to become a CL team and seeing if we can compete regularly against quality sides.
If not we then need to be qualifying from the EL groups and see where that takes us.
I think we get to parochial in our outlook where we make the league title our be all every season. Yes it's our bread and butter but won't attract the type of players we require / deserve.
I would take a league title every couple of years if we were successful at a higher level - Europe.
Do we really want to win the league every year and then get embarrassed in Europe? I'd prefer to leave that outlook to our City rivals.

Hi Dado, I purely base my theory in the fact that we’ve made it to a final twice in the last 50odd years, I don’t count that as regular. Also I think as a size of club including fan base and stature etc we are a big club in Europe, but we’re hamstrung with the league we’re playing in and funds available to us. Look for example at Cinch paying about £10m a year to get their name on the spurs sleeve, and how much do we get for them sponsoring the league? Also as I said earlier, this year was a great run but 9 times out of 10 we’ll get beaten by the bigger clubs like Dortmund. That’s just my opinion.

Made it to 2 European finals in the last 14 years but we only participated in Europe in 9 of those years.

Since Barcelona we have made it to 2 finals. I can count lads, I should have said 2 finals in the last 49yrs. The fact is that’s not exactly regular. Given the financial disparity is actually worse now, I’d be interested to know why some people think we should get to semi finals and finals regularly? That’s like st Johnstone fans saying after last year they should regularly get to the final of the Scottish cup.

With a quality manager, (and I put Gio in this category), and the right players then I can see no reason why we can't attract a good quality of player although I acknowledge that playing in Scotland has to be a negative.
We always need to be targeting to win the League and I genuinely believe that each season we need to strengthen the squad and seek to improve the quality while knowing that we will most likely sell at least one of our top players.
We don't know what shape European Football will take over the next few years and it is important that we are at the pinnacle of Scottish Football to ensure that we are the top table.
At the end of the day, we are Rangers, we are well respected across Europe and at the very least, young players will see us as an ideal stepping stone to the EPL while older quality players that haven't won anything will see us as a Club where they can win trophies.
