People say a lot about Tav being ( or not being ) "Captain material".
So what actually constitutes "Captain Material"?
Is it playing ability? Respect amongst fellow teammates? Being vocal? Managers favourite? Definite weekly starter?
Or do fans just take umbrage to certain players and will never concede they bring something to the table?
Stuart McCall once said the 9IAR team had leaders all over the park.
Should we not expect this from the current team with experienced pros like McGregor, Davis, Goldson, Arfield etc all able to drive the players on? Is it Tavs sole responsibility?
Rangers have had 33 official club captains in their history.
I've been fortunate enough to have seen 18 of them.
My favourite? Well the man voted the greatest ever Ranger - John Grieg - has to be in there.
And I also loved guys like Gough, Butcher and Ferguson who all lead by example.
My dad speaks highly of George Young, Bobby Shearer and later on Amoruso.
First club captain was Tom Vallance, 1876 to 1882.
First non-Scottish captain was Belfast born Bert Manderson, 1926 to 1927 and who also represented Ireland 5 times.
Longest serving Captain is jointly held by Jock Shaw and John Greig - 13 years.
First English Captain was Terry Butcher - 1986 to 1990.
First European and non- British to Captain the club was Brian Laudrup - but only for 139 days!
First overseas Captain was Craig Moore.
First goalkeeper Captain - Stefan Klos.
Shortest serving Captain was Gavin Rae - handed the armband after Le Guen stripped Ferguson of the captaincy.
Plenty have been handed the Captaincy in strange circumstances.
The aforementioned Rae. Derek Johnstone was handed the captaincy by John Grieg after he handed in a transfer request!
Richard Gough was handed the captaincy after a row between Souness and Butcher.
Others have lost the captaincy - Barry Ferguson ( I think most will agree a brilliant leader ) twice stripped of the captaincy by Le Guen and Sir Walter.
John McClelland lost it after contract talks stalled.
Butcher ( Souness ) and Craig Moore ( McLeish ) lost the captaincy after disagreements with the respective manager at the time.
Some famous names have been stripped of our Captaincy for certain indiscretions.
Tav might not have been the greatest or most famous player to have the honour of being Captain, but he is certainly not the worst.
He also hasn't been stripped of the captaincy or handed it in unforeseen circumstances.
And he will live forever in our memory as the man who delivered 55 and ruined the lives of a generation of Celtic fans.

Tav need drive, motived and lead by example that's a captain imo

He really can't defend for a defender that's one of his weakness.

copy paste job.
So does Tav fit this definition?

The football captain
The captain of a team in “the beautiful game” is largely seen as a motivator – the on-field embodiment of the team philosophy.

They have the loudest voice, the imposing presence, a special connection with fans and the media, and unlimited respect from their peers.

What the football captain is not, however, is a decision-maker.

Rarely in the course of a football match is the captain required to make an actual on-field decision that will affect the course of the game. Those responsibilities are reserved solely for the manager.

Tav may not be the worst, but at the moment we need a leader of men, Tav isn't .

For me Tav shouldn’t be captain because when both fit Patterson should be a head of him IMO already a better player than him and can defend which is vital for a defender.

We are going to end up losing Patterson by not playing him and I wouldn’t blame the kid for leaving either.

What does it matter if it was a copy and paste job or not 😬.

Agree with Stormtrooper - for me the captain should be someone who is one of the first names on the team sheet and and i think it's becoming clearer that with the emergence of Paterson that Tavs days are numbered (Garrard has even said as much) .

Jack is captain material - gets what it's all about, provides something nobody else in the squad can and rarely has a performance below 7/ 10 (unfortunately he's not fit) .

I think we have been spoilt for choice with leaders and rangers men over the years - would be nice to see players being a bit more vocal. When th chips are down it doesn't look as though anyone on the pitch is really trying to motivate or inspire (would kill for an Ian Ferguson in that team right now! ) .

I certainly never copied and pasted that!
I think Punter is talking about his own post for the definition of a captain.

Ur it’s only my opinion of course but
I think we have probably already lost Paterson, we certainly can’t complain about accepting large offers for young players who nay or may not be top quality, for the record I think he is and obviously some top professionals think that too

We cannot laud the guys who took over our club anf introduced a financial way forward out of the depths of despair and financial hardship

Then criticise the first actual implementation of the plan.

I think punter meant his own post KJ. When I read it at first that's what I thought, but it was meant for his own one.
The Tav vs Patterson debate is only going to get tastier the longer both remain at the club. Both are terrific players in my opinion and I'm just glad I'm not picking the team. If Patterson is not first pick for us, but is a regular for Scotland and doing well, does anybody on here really think he'll stay around playing 2nd fiddle to Tav? I don't! But that's just my opinion.

I think Patterson will be offski although no doubt we all want him to stay and play.
Not only will it be hard for the board to turn down a good offer and Patterson himself would be mad to turn it down as well. He may well be a fan of the club but life changing deals change people's minds. Set up for life at 20yrs old with your career ahead of you lovely jubly💰💰.

Correct Tom.
The club can only sell the players others are willing to buy.
And for all we know Patterson might have aspirations to play at the highest level possible.
Tierney was a huge Celtics c fan and jumped ship before 9IAR and Terry Munro.

Money and family comfort and prosperity spoke to tierney before his fragile body began breaking
Same will occur with Nathan soon

Professional advice will conquer any love of Rangers, unfortunately for us fans.

The days of being loyal to your boyhood heroes are long gone. Money talks! If Patterson gets offered minimum 40k a week to move down south, then it'll be see you later. Let's face it, who would blame him?
Even though I think he's far too good to be sitting on our bench, If it is indeed Everton he moves to, he'll probably be swapping one bench for another. But with 40k a week in his back pocket, the Everton bench will feel a lot more comfortable to the Rangers one.
15m is the absolute minimum number we should settle for with a number of add ons and a hefty sell on fee written into the deal. However, I fear we'll sell him for less.
