Anybody else think that Tav should be in Midfield? He seems to get the most stick when he puts in a bad defensive display. A think he would get even better without having to worry about the defending. Now that Big Borna is playing well, Flanagan could take Tavs place at right back, see how he does in his natural position. Just a thought Bears.

Nope, the reason he looks so good going forward is that he is pushing up from a defensive position and often his direct opponent (ie a winger) isn’t tracking him well enough. At the same time the opposite fullbacks is concerned with the movement of our right sided forward and this in turn creates space for Tav for is very good at exploiting this when breaking forward from fullback. Move him into midfield and all of this would be lost. Plus we play a 3 man midfield, we don’t play with a right sided midfielder so where exactly are you playing him? Plus our defence isn’t exactly doing badly so far this season. Plus if you understood our tactics you would know that Gerrard is purposely looking for both fullbacks to push high. He knows this will leave space behind them so is why we play with two sitting type midfielders who drop and cover when the fullbacks push on (it’s exactly the same way Liverpool play) . All of these points makes Tav the ideal player to be our right fullback. Certainly not a midfielder.

good analysis of our tactics Ger78. The mob on the other side of the city also play this way.

Ger78, do you think people on here will accept your analyis and stop complaining about Tav being caught upfield when he should be in defence. I was always taught that if the full back goes forward give him the ball and if you don't and lose the ball, he will obviously be caught out of position.

Doesn’t matter if they accept my analysis or not, I’m not the Rangers manager, I’m just stating that that’s the way we play, it’s the way Gerrard wants us to play. The modern day fullback in most teams is now much more of an attacking player and it’s the tactics that a lot of teams adopt (Barcelona really started, look at them, they actually regularly play wingers in the fullback positions) Gerrard wants are fullbacks to provide an attacking threat/ option and plays with a solid 3 in the middle who are all capable of dropping back and covering if need be. It’s the way he wants it and I for one think it’s working really well. If you change it and move Tav into midfield (which actually in our line up you couldn’t do, you do actually have to play him in the right forward position which wouldn’t work at all) and play Flanagan at right back we’d lose a lot of our attacking flair.

Hi Swanseablue, Celtic do play similarly however they are more of a 451 or a 4231 even with usually two sitting midfielders, an attacking midfielder and two wide players. We play a 433 with often a solid 3 in the middle and two supporting inside forwards either side of a main attacker, both who can interchange and drop deeper when needed. They don’t always tend to play that wide. They play closer to the front man therefore creating space for the fullbacks to go outside them. It’s the exact set up as Liverpool which is no surprise at all seeing as Gerrard coached their academy team who use the same tactics as the first team.
