Not Rangers related, but given the time of year just a wee change of topic for folk to discuss.

What is everyone's first World Cup memory?

Argentina 78 and the Scottish football fans slating the team after the draw against Iran. Will always remember them shouting "we want our money back" 36 years on and us Gers fans "want our club back"

World Cup 98 I was fascinated with Brazil, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos played a brand of Football I had never seen before as a young lad I was mesmerised. I can remember everything from that World Cup. Zidane in the final was unbelievable. Think Davor Suker won the Golden boot. I've never been as interested in it again since that year when I was 7. I have a picture of me watching Sco v Bra with my Brazil shirt on can't stand them anymore don't care for Scotland much either lol. I remember it was the 1st time I saw big Valderama with the blonde Afro, the Paraguay goalkeeper used to hit the penaltys was exciting would love to know his name if anyone can remember it started with a C? The guy Salas for Chile was great you had Klinsmann, Vieri, Hernandez Mexico, Bergkamp, Batistuta, Ortega, Raul, Kluivert, Brian Laudrup got 2, Henry as a young man scored a few goals also, England v Argentina Simeone & Beckham Owens goal. France 98 was when the World Cup was any good I could tell you anything about it couldn't tell you whose even won them all since!

6.) 07 Jun 2014
Chile and Italy kicking lumps out of each other at the 1962 World Cup Finals in Chile!

7.) 07 Jun 2014
I was just a wee daft laddie, 8 years old watching the mighty Brazil v Scotland at Spain 82. Narey scores his toe poke and my family went mental! I'm ashamed to say now, I hid behind the couch for the rest of the game willing Brazil to win! You've got to remember at the time Brazil were massively hyped by the media, and I was only 8!
Another great memory was the game against Sweden in the 1990 WC. Beat them 2-1 and if results went the right way in the next games, we could at last qualify for the knock outs.
Naah!

OP I rest my case, see previous post

9.) 08 Jun 2014
World Cup 1966. Was looking forward to watching my hero Pele dazzle the crowds instead he was kicked off the park by Bulgaria missed the next match due to injury, then played Portugal who did exactly the same no player was booked by the ref and Pele played on injured as they had no subs then. the emergence of a new talent took 1966 by storm Eusabio of Portugal.

1954, Scotland getting beat 7-0 by Uruguay. It was a Sunday morning and all us wee laddies couldn't believe it. By the end of the tournament we all wanted to be Helmut Rahn (we didn't tell our fathers, it was only 9 years since the war!)

Billy Bremner's miss against Brazil in 74. If that would have went in who knows what Scotland might have done. Best squad ever for me with a bunch of players from the top English clubs plus the likes of Danny McGrain and of course our own Sandy Jardine Jardine.

12.) 08 Jun 2014
Good call Naz I also remember Bremner against Zaire when we were 2-0'up telling everyone to defend when we needed goals and they were their for the taking I never forgave him for that

Also remember thousands cheering the Scotland squad off to the World Cup 78 at Hampden. Think there were more people there to watch the players board a bus than there were for the last 2 semi finals in the Scottish cup played at Hampden. I was only 8 but was convinced we were going to win the World Cup. Thought we would swat Peru and Iran aside and beat the Dutch. Always remember the Peru player scoring a free kick with the outside of his foot and the permed Alan Rough not getting close to it. Couldn't believe big DJ never played either after having scored 2 great goals against Wales and N Ireland in the home international championships
