Rangers are close to completing the fourth signing of the Ally McCoist era by capturing towering defender Dorin Goian from Palermo.

The Romanian should be at Murray Park on Monday morning for final negotiations and a medical. Should there be no last-minute hitches, Goian will meet the 5pm registration deadline - allowing him to play in the Champions League qualifier with Malmo at Ibrox on Tuesday night.

Rangers agreed a fee of around £750,000 with the player's Italian club and talks on Sunday took the 30-year-old closer to joining the SPL champions.

Skipper David Weir will also be in contention for a place against Malmo, with the pairing of Madjid Bougherra and Kirk Broadfoot having struggled badly for much of Saturday's 1-1 draw with Hearts.

The opening SPL encounter saw Spanish midfielder Juan Ortiz make his debut at Ibrox but Lee Wallace remained on the bench against his old club.

Rangers still hope to bring forward the January arrival of Alejandro Bedoya from Orebro and Sportsmail understands talks today by the Ibrox hierarchy will determine their next move on other targets such as St Johnstone midfielder Murray Davidson and Arsenal's Kyle Bartley.

I really hope that the Bougherra rumour is true, his first season he was awesome and he has gradually got worse, the whole def bar papac were awful.

He left us so exposed yesterday, gung ho garbage defending. Get 2 big solid defenders in and let the mid and attack do all the attacking

Bougherra and Broadfoot are not a dream duo at Centre Half. Davy Weir as captain will play when he's fit with someone. The guys we are looking at sound ok. Fingers crossed Bartley might get back though.

Heard back at the end of June similar rumours, from an ex players father in law. Suppose it's the usual sort of thing that Ally wasn't Whyte's appointment, but that of the old board, similar to Sam Allardyce getting chased out of Newcastle by the new chairman for example. Take a brave man though to sack a legend like Ally, am not too sure of Whyte to be honest...seems to like getting his mug in the papers, still not sure when he had his hands on the trophy last season, when he came in right at the death. Dont know, just dont trust the guy but suppose time will tell.

Fiorentina are in a lot of debt . that could be a good shout but would cost 3/4m .

Babacar was on mr wengers radar last January and he was quoted a price of 12 million so it is highly unlikely that they would accept an offer off of us.

Juhasz (£1.6-£1.8m)
Goodwillie (January £1.75m depending on court case)
Cuellar (£2m)

Add to that, Wallace, Bedoya and Ortiz I reckon we have a strong squad for 4IAR.

Also, James McFadden won't happen, neither will Zoltan Gera.
