When Joey Barton signed I was very disappointed because I think Rangers players; past, present and future need to have personal and professional standards that are high and I felt - and still feel - that his historical behaviour did not belong at Ibrox.

Having watched his press conference in full, again, I have to say that - whilst I still have reservations - if he performs on the pitch as he does at in front of the media he could be a great player for us. I just hope he keeps his head and plays his game on the pitch. He doesn't need to prove how much he loves Rangers by getting sent off against Celtic.

Good post OP. I really hope he's not just here to be in the media spotlight at a huge club and promote himself as a loudmouthed media figure.

What about when gazza signed, did you feel the same or did u put that to the back of your mind because of his abilities. you don't always get the perfect footballer on and off the pitch mate. there's always things that people don't like about people, nobody is perfect.

I'm really glad we signed Barton. whatever his past, he's grown up and moved on. the fact he got in the championship team of the year says it all. that's one of the hardest leagues to play in. I'm not saying the best, but hardest. he's quality and will bring a lot to our team on the field and off it especially with the media. he won't back down from no. 1 especially the other side getting sent off doesn't prove nothing to me in an old firm game.

I'd rather we won the game as winning is the single most important thing we win trophies we win cups. I believe he's here for the right reasons, I just hope he proves it when he pulls the jersey on his back winning against Dundee is just as important. we want to win every game. he's got more passion in his big toe than broonys got in his whole body. can't wait till the beginning of a great season.

Bruised Bear. Good post. This has always been my take on the Barton transfer. Good player - yes, no doubt about it (though nowhere near Gazza imo) , but I think the media circus up here along with the haters will constantly try to mess with his head, hoping for a reaction. If he does react, especially in an OF match, the baw would be well and truly burst. He really needs to shut his trap and do his talking on the pitch. Only then will he gain the respect of our support and it will show the rest that their tactics will not work. Would love to see him make his mark for the right reasons, though I have serious doubts as to whether or not he is capable of a little restraint from time to time.

Barton is the catalyst for all these other players joining, he has put us back on the Footballing map. As for his quality, he will be the best player in the league by a country mile, of that I have no doubt. The English Championship is full of expensive signings and yet he was the man there last year. We also have the squad to fill in for him should he find himself suspended/ injured at any point although I honestly think that side of him has mellowed.

Humey, when Gazza signed for Rangers it was 1995 and I was under 30. At that point I cared less about honour and integrity and the true meaning to me of Rangers. I'm older now, these aspects are more important to me and I want Rangers to be exemplary off and on the pitch.

I accept no-one is perfect but there are degrees of imperfection. Additionally, Gazza was world class, Barton isn't; Gazza was a bit of an idiot, Barton is/ was a thug. An intelligent and articulate one though.

In 1995, it wasn't common knowledge that Gazza hit his wife so I couldn't be morally outraged by what I didn't know.

On a similar topic, I don't understand those who wholeheartedly accept Barton's signing but slate those who reckon Jason Cummings should sign, just because he's done some silly stuff. Whatever Jason Cummings has done - it doesn't come close to Barton's misdemeanours.
