This is going to sound pedantic and I don't mean it to be, but Clement won't be the one backed in the transfer market it'll be the DoF. Clement's likely been assured there is money to fix the mess the team is in but that's it. At Monaco Clement had zero dealings or say in signings, he played what he was given and that was the same for his time in Belgium.

That's all fine and dandy guys but i'd be totally shocked if clement has no say at all, in any players signed for our club ? Surely our manager will have to have the final say on players our director of football puts forward to him ?.

In an ideal world, with the right people in the right roles, its perfectly reasonable that the manager manages what he is given and doesn't have too much say in signings. Imo the manager is there to achieve short term goals, i. e. win, whilst the technical director etc are there to sign players (including at youth level) who fit in with the long term strategy and values of the club. All being set fair, it's the upper management/ director roles that are the continuity at the club rather than the first team manager.

Sensible approach is for manager to sit with DOF and discuss positions he wants to strengthen and type of player to fit the system. They then identify several potential targets and manager ranks those in order of preference. DOF then deals with signings of said targets.

Beale I'm 100% with you on this. This is how he works and it works well for him. He will get a tune out of this team and I'm looking forward to it.


Sir Walter, I know it may sound unusual but he really doesn't care. He relays his needs and requirements to the DoF and its the DoF that gets a player in to satisfy that need. This is exactly how Clement and Mitchell worked at Monaco and how Clement worked in Belguim. It works for Clement.

What happens is it manager wants to strengthen a certain position, he tell dof.
Whether it’s a starter or a back up player will determine what the dof then presents to the manager.

It’s normally a case of there is 3 options within our price range and wage structure which one would u like?

The manager will have a final day on which player comes in he just maybe won’t be part of the process in finding the players in which he has to choose from.
