With the current debate about plastic pitches, does anyone know whether Scotland stands along in their use in the top league or is it similar in other European countries?

Does UEFA specify grass pitches or have a list of acceptable plastic pitches?

A lot of Russian and Scandinavian teams have them. Probably because their climate is Antarctic most of the time. Its more to do with the upkeep of pitches plus every club must have under soil heating in the Spfl. Also these teams hire the pitch out for 4/ 5 days of the week to draw in extra income. However clubs like ourselves and Celtic who spend millions on players have a right to be upset as every year we get injuries caused by them. Not only that the quality of football on show is dire because the ball bobbles all over the place. Its time for the top teams in Scotland to take action.

Unfortunately all this boils down to income.

The Livingstons, Kilmarnocks and Hamilton’s of the game can not afford home games to be called off. Especially if it was one of the old firm visiting. Colsters point about hiring out is also sadly very true. The pitch gets divided up in to several 7 aside pitched and the club charges an hour fees to regular guys like me and you to have a kick about! This purely generates extra money!

My opinion is plastic pitches in the Premier League shouldn’t be allowed. The pitch should have undersoil heating, adequate drainage and full time ground staff.
We are talking about possible career ending injuries here if the trend of plastic pitches continue. I think the SFA still have a criteria on premier league stadia, grass pitches has to be added to the list.

The other argument is that SKY, BT don’t give us enough money, that’s another argument for another day.

Good debate about plastic pitches. Surely the SFA could give teams a grant to install under-soil heating? What do they do with all their money?

Doiger

I’ve said many times about how the SFA don’t do enough to help the “smaller” clubs of our league.

The sad reality is I can only see things getting worse, I fear Ross County, ICT, Dundee, Patrick Thistle might follow suit and go for the astro.

The problem is the SFA don't have the money to pay for these grass pitches, its too late now i'm afraid. Teams coming up from the championship will have astroturf and it costs thousands to replace these pitches with the grass. Teams will lose transfer budget and maybe even have money problems if they are required to have grass pitches. As much as we hate them and as much as we know they cause injury we have to make do with it because it isn't going to change.
