so Cardoso contract terminated by mutual agreement

will clearly go back to Portugal, what i don't get is instead of terminating why not just tell interested teams 100-200k? least get something instead of tearing up contract at a loss to us.

You can tell other clubs whatever you like, it won't make them want to pay out cash for a marshmallow centre half. I'm sure that if any interested party had come along we would not have been difficult to deal with. There probably were none. Our problem is we've had years of buying unsellable players but now, hopefully, that's in the past.

He will probably have a decent career and won't surprise me if he eventually ends up at a good Portuguese club, Scottish football was just too physical for him.

I agree that releasing him wa the right move . If he had stayed until sat January he would have been collecting a wage of say £10k a week for 4-5 months . Then even if you sold him for the £100k quoted you would still be well down . Right to get rid just now, with maybe a few others to follow .

Cambiger imagine if he had stayed till end of contract, two years at 10k a week one million.
Let him go, with no pay offis good business, sure he will be picked up with signing on fee spread over contract. Beats paying 50% tax on deal here.
