Who Mark Allen the director of football who tells the manager who he is allowed to buy? Is that who you mean when you say “looking at”?

He probably does mean the director of football aye. That's the way the board want to run the club it seems.

I can understand the merits of it as long as he works with the new manager when he comes in. If either one of them is a dominant force then it won't work.

It won’t work and will never work I’m afraid. The dominant force when it comes to signing players is and should be the manager because he is the one who picks the team and tactics and should always have the control in what players get signed to play in the first team. If a director of football is there to help with the financial negotiations with a player which the manager, not the director of football, has identified to strengthen the team then fair enough but that’s where the director of footballs involvement in the dealings with first team players end. Do you think he was picking the players for Pep Guardiola to sign over the last year? No chance! He shouldn’t be interfering with the managers dealings in the first team. Definitely going to affect us getting a new manager in.

It can work the manager identifies the type of player he needs for example a speedy striker the DOF then identifies candidates they then sit down and agree on who to go for and the DOF gets the player

Rickwitter do you ever have anything positive to say? Such a negative person. Murty is only saying he is in charge at the moment because we don't have a full time manager

Personally don't like a dof buying players on his own. The manager should be identifying which areas of the team he wants to strengthen and also key players he wants to get in, the dof should then add those names to a shortlist of players along with other realistic targets which he and the scouting team have identified. All information should then be presented back to the manager - transfer fees, wages etc of all shortlisted players, and he selects which one (s) we sign. After all he is the one that will eventually be sacked if the signings and team doesn't perform, I can't remember many high profile dof being sacked.

Why would he be be picking the players for Pep last year? He wasn't director of football at City. He was head of youth development.

Scottish football is being left behind. The status quo doesn't work - that's been proven. Why not try something different?

I'm not convinced it'll be great either but it's worth a shot. Guess it's easier to rage against the machine though, right Rick?

If the status quo doesn't work, and some have rage against the machine, does that put the club in dire straits? Thank you.

13 Dec 2017 04:40:20
It’s not worth a shot because it won’t work because he is interfering with the team. No credible manager would put up with that and if the board think that’s a healthy way to go forward then I really don’t see things getting any better. It’s a waste of a wage and he’s better going back to work with MTV because it’s going to cost us in the long run.

The same player that would cost millions to buy? .

How can rangers be seriously looking at any players How can a new manager come in and say these players don’t fit my system need my own also rangers need to offload players before they can seriously give anew manger wonga to sign new players so Zyro 😀😀😀😀😀

Just because rick has a different opinion doesn't mean he is negative. I don't like the dof role, I think its a waste of a wage. The manager is the man who builds his team. I think the dof would put a lot of managers off the job. Obviously I hope it works out. Could you imagine someone telling walter or ferguson which players they were getting. Its a nonsense role.

Director of football will make the signings but I’m sure if and when we get a manager he will take their opinion on board. Would be pointless signing someone if the manager said he won’t play him.

I love how folks just make their own job spec up for dof.

Mark has stated he is here to assist the manager, whoever it is, and does not interfere. He oversees the whole pull of players, identifying potential academy players next to come through and any skill gaps thereafter.

Murty has also stated they work together to identify specific requirements.

It has been made clear that the manager has the final say.

Imo, it makes sense to have that continuity within the club so that everything doesn't grind to a halt at a time like this, for example.

We need someone in or we'll miss out in January. Then the new manager will come in (maybe) and will be left with the same crap.

16.) 13 Dec 2017
13 Dec 2017 11:01:15
The first team manager should identify what postion we need strengthing and go to the director of football and ask who do we have on our data base for that postion and have the final say on who he would prefer for that postion and be able to reccomend players to add to the data base.
No director of football should be buying players who he like managet should get final say it seems there are going down this route of director picking and it is so wrong no good manager will want to come under this situion

The arguments this is causing is why DoF doesn't work.

We've had Allen in since late June and this club has worsened during that time. I'm not blaming him, of course, but it seems to me there are far too many people at our club who think they know how to do things, and they clearly don't.

What the heck gives a youth coach head the CV to become our Director of Football?! For example, if that's all it takes, why didn't we just promote Mulholland?

Nah, DoF for me is just too many cooks spoiling the broth, and there's been no evidence in any sense that we ever needed one.

18.) 13 Dec 2017
13 Dec 2017 20:32:33
Guys it's not hard to figure this one out, Mark Allen will have a database of youth team players and recommendations from the scouting network for a variety of positions, the manager identifies a position that needs strengthened then they sit down and discuss who is on the shortlist or if the manager has a name in mind Allen does his due diligence and if said player is within budget/ ticks the right boxes a move can be made. Allen isn't going to sign a Ronaldo if the manager needs a Ramos.

DoF has made enquiries to Wolves for Zyro on loan.

He’s not getting 1st team football and needs game time. The want him in a League where it’s physical and draws big crowds

I have this on very good authority, whether we get him or not remains to be seen. 🇬🇧

20.) 14 Dec 2017
14 Dec 2017 08:10:17
Surely a chief scout could have a database, why does it have to be a dof? I just don't see the need for a dof.

21.) 14 Dec 2017
14 Dec 2017 10:52:38
Is the whole point of the DoF not similar to Southampton?

The club have a philosophy on the types of players and style of football they want to play. Anyone brought to the club has to fit in with all of that and that includes the manager. The manager will no doubt identify weak areas to be strengthened and will have his own opinions on who to recruit which is up to the scouting to asses if the player fits the requirement. This should give a continuity to a tram even if the manager is sacked or leaves.

Something that southampton implemented years ago and its been a massive success. From lower leagues to high PL finishes on this method with players being sold for massive profits. Really can't see what peoples issues with this are. All i think is it is a total misunderstanding of what the roles involve

yet to hear this mark allen speak so no idea what his role is or what his intentions are moving forward, in my opinion the position is not required, a strong manager and good backroom team/ coaches would suffice

No idea if D. O. F 's work but plenty of clubs have them. Maybe should give the boy a chance?
